$4000 Stipend Available for Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program
Then University of Alabama at Birmingham's Center for Nanoscale Materials and Biointegration offers a 10-week summer program sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Alabama Space Grant Consortium.
Participates take part in hands on research being conducted by renowned scientist in the fields of Physics, Astronomy, Biophysics and Physiology, Engineering including Biomedical, Materials Science and Electrical Engineering.
A small sampling of the projects available includes (but not limited to):
- Synthesis and Characterization of Nanoscale Materials
- Diamond Growth and Characterization
- High Pressure Materials Research
- Properties of Microelectronic Materials
- New Laser Materials
- Industrial Research Projects
- Planetary and Interstellar Materials
- Fiber Optic Biosensors
- Materials for Biomedical Implants
- Electrospun Polymeric Biomaterials
- Ultrafast Terahertz Spectroscopy in Materials Research
- Self Assembly of Materials for Tissue Engineering
- Laser Tweezers in Biophysical Research
- Computational Research Projects
- Optical Imaging and Electrophysiological Study of Excitable Tissues
This year the Summer 2012 Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program will be from May 20, 2012 through July 27, 2012. Students from across the country are encouraged to apply.
In addition to the $4000 stipend, the program pays for the participants' round trip travel to and from his/her home institution. PLUS for those whose permanent residence is not located in the Metropolitan Birmingham area, the program pays for dorm accommodations for the entire 10 week period.
The program culminates with a Campus-wide poster session. It's a great opportunity for undergraduates and it often serves as the determining factor as to whether or not they'd like to continue their studies in graduate school.
For more information, log on to the REU website or interested parties can go directly to the application and complete it online.
