You Snooze, You Lose! Who Moved My Cheese! Am I in Oz?

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Properties

sleeping clockYou Snooze, You Lose!  Don't Ever Fall Asleep!  You may wake up in Oz!  I recently had an unexpected shut down and was flat on my back with  bed rest for several days!  I did not access ActiveRain for five days!  That hurt!  I had faithfully posted my 10 posts each week and commented 10 or more times every day since October 2010!

I did not access the Internet at all during those five days!  Again, a first in many years!  I did not read any real estate related news.  I was basically MIA!

What in the heck happened?  I am trying to get back in the fast lane again and feel I have been dropped on another planet!  I feel like I am out of step with everything, everyone, the entire universe!

Who moved my cheese?

  • ActiveRain is not the same!  I have been stumbling around all week and feel like I am in someone else's home rather than mine.
  • Local MLS - changes galore!
  • New contract forms!
  • Picnik is going away!
  • Google changes!
  • Facebook changes, not to mention them about to go public!
  • Etc. Etc Etc.  - Did the world shift in those five days?

Be afraid!  Be very afraid!  These are just a few of the changes that happened in the five days I was flat on my back with bed rest and out of step with the world!  We can not afford to be out of step with the marketplace.  This brief five day period is an example of how quickly you can slip away if you are not vigilant.

Change waits for no one!  I am reminded of the many people in our industry who have not changed with the times, some for many years.  Many top producers of years gone by are waiting around, wondering when the market will change back!

Here's the 411, People!  The market will never, never, never be the same.  Technology changes moves at lightening speed striking many thousand times an hour.  There are agents who say that the Internet has ruined our business!  Say what?  Yes, they believe that.

Keeping ahead of the real estate market requires daily action, lots of research and just plain hard work!  There are people in the business, well perhaps NOT really in the business, who are saying they are taking a little break until the market turns around.   Well, good luck getting back in the business if you do not keep up with the business on a daily basis.  Today's success will soon be only a memory unless you stay ahead of the curve!

You Snooze, You Lose!  Don't doubt it for a minute, we have to stay in the game or be left sitting in the dust!  Being out of step those unexpected five days made me realize again just how fast paced this real estate business really is.  We can come back from a five day or ten day departure, BUT we have to work hard at staying on top of our game every day, every month or we can become one of those "has beens" and it can happen in what feels like the blink of an eye in these fast paced times.

You Snooze, you may as well pack your bags for Oz!

It amazing how much things change in our business.  Who ever heard of cloud computing 2 years ago?  Who ever heard of smartphones or social media 5 years ago?  Wifi or text messaging or flat screen TVs 10 years ago?  MLS and listings on the internet 15 years ago?  Things are rapidly evolving and information and technology seem to travel in the blink of an eye.

Dear Barbara,

Feeling out of sorts is just a matter of perspective & the after effects of the flu, or whatever put you out. In ten years, you would have to go back to this blog to remember that you felt out of it for a few days.

Glad to hear  you are feeling better. One of the things i always told my daughters was "the only thing that is consistant is the fact that nothing stays the same" change happens.. it does seem that its happening a bit faster these days.

I get about 175 emails a day (not including SPAM) - I'm on a few too many committees and groups!

I would absolutely shoot myself if I could not check email every couple of hours!!  I'm so OCD, that my INBOX has to be clean and neat in order for me to be at peace!  Okay I admit, sometimes when you are really busy - this just IS NOT Possible!    Joy

ActiveRain, the Internet, picniks are all tools for me to be a better real estate agent, I am selling real estate not the Internet.

Things are changing very, very fast, and we do have to be diligent to stay on top of all of these changes. It makes me think of the agents that have not kept up with the changes to-date, I wouldn't even know where to begin if I weren't on it daily. It's a great snapshot of how much can happen even after 5 days. I'm glad you're feeling better!

David - right, we can't afford to be MIA for long as we will definitely be out of step!

Bryan - I like the idea of raising the bar!  :)

Julie - technology waits for no man - or woman!

Peggy - you are so right!  The older I get the more it seems like everything is in double time!

Evelyn - Thanks!  I am still playing catch-up, but working hard on it.

Gretchen - the trick is to stay ahead of the curve!  This does not allow much time out.

Brenda - if they can't keep up - leave 'em sitting in the dust!  :-)  This is a fast paced business.

Carla - Constant changes turns in the way things are, to the way thing were - now memories!

Erica - about to find my grove again!  :)

Sandy - the five days without the Internet was a record for me - still trying to catch up.

Charlie - being out those few days is proof of how quickly things in our world moves today!

Barbara Jo - Thanks!  Still trying to catch up - but getting there.

Julie - Thanks - AR is awesome!  A great place to learn, share and keep up with everything.

Rob - I hear you loud and clear!  5 years ago we would not have dreamed of all that is availabel to us today.  10 years ago would be like going back to the darkages.

Donna - we have to learn to keep our heads up, focus and stay ahead of the pack.

Janis - it does feel like a race track at time, but it is exciting to be part of this industry during these times.

Dorte - WOW!  I would like to read this post 10 years from now!

Joy - 175 emails a day - I often will get than many also and it is a major job just managing the email, but a necessary part of the biz.

David - I agree!  The Internet and all the gadgets are the tools of our trade.  We need to keep focused that our job it so sell real estate!  Nice reminder.

Sylvie - thanks!  Here we are at mid February already!  No time to coast at all.  :0)

Bruce - I think I experienced those withdrawal symptoms too!  Does not take long for this to happen.

Kasey - we are in a business where we can not be off, not without proper planning and systems in place.

Gene - right - We can become a Dinosaur almost overnight if we do not grow and change.  I am glad that I do enjoy change.

Kathy - thanks you.  Here's to staying ahead of the curve!

Bob - the new AR is a challenge still for me but is getting easier.  Some of the old features I miss, but, there you is change!

Dawn - I am starting to feel acclimated again, but still having to push.  It is a good thing to be reminded at times how c quickly things change...then we won't be tempted to stay out of touch with the changes.

Ron - change, change, change....what is new?  More change!  At lease our days are interesting!  We need an eye opener at time and the five unexpected days out of touch was mine.
