On Friday, January 20, 2012, New Zealand police raided the palatial home of the 37 year old MEGAUPLOAD founder - Kim Dotcom. Dotcom, who also goes by the name of Kim Schmitz, is a German national with Residency in New Zealand.
Clearly SOPA PIPA Unnecessary since "The FBI contacted New Zealand Police in early 2011 with a request to assist with their investigation into the Mega Conspiracy," said Detective Inspector Grant Wormald from the Organised & Financial Crime Agency New Zealand. "All the accused have been indicted in the United States. We will continue to work with the U.S. authorities to assist with the extradition proceedings," Wormald said in a statement.
We, as internet users for our real estate businesses, are at grave risk from SOPA PIPA Unnecessary additions to our laws. Both SOPA and PIPA are based on the opposite of American law - they offered shut-downs until the accused proved innocence - not the American way of INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY!
The laws exist - even on an international level - to control copyright theft. A group of approximately 70 policemen raided 10 properties at the same time and arrested not only Dotcom but other officials of the group. The arrests included a Dutch national named Bram van der Kolk, 29, also a New Zealand resident as well as the website's chief marketing officer, Finn Batato and the chief technical officer and co-founder Mathias Ortmann, 40, both from Germany. The arrests demonstrate that SOPA PIPA Unnecessary additions to law.
The news reports from several sources stated that the New Zealand police seized millions of dollars worth of assets from the MEGAUPLOAD group. These included “luxury cars such as a Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe”. In addition, the police seized more than $8 million (NZ$10 million) from financial institutions.
Prosecutors dubbed the group the "Mega Conspiracy". The men appeared briefly in an Auckland court on Friday and were remanded in custody until Monday for a bail hearing. At the bail hearing, held on January 25, 2012, Dotcom was denied bail due to the Judge’s concern that the Internet magnate’s vast wealth might allow him to flee the country if he were released from custody.
The wonderful example of international cooperation needed to bring these extravagantly wealthy thieves to justice is laudable and proves that both SOPA PIPA Unnecessary for internet safety and copyright protection.
The unravelling of this mess will be an amazing story of greed and arrogance. Thanks to the existing legal remedies, these felons are where they belong tonight.
Have a happy day -
