The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Review

As a fifth grader, C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" was one of my favorite books. Its initial premise of an ordinary-looking wardrobe that lead to a land of magical creatures and talking animals one that opened up my young imagination in a way nothing else quite had before.

Although I read the book a few times, it was the first few chapters that I would return to most often. The introduction to the four Pevensie kids and the first trip to the snowy landscape of Narnia by the younger Pevensie sister, Lucy, held both a sense of wonderment and an eerie feeling of the unknown that was irresistible to this ten-year-old.

Having not read the enduring C.S. Lewis classic in close to twenty-four years, those fond childhood memories had begun to haze over until seeing it last night with my own seven and nine year old daughters.

The film is geared primarily toward a younger audience and parents who want to have something to see with their children. Very nicely done graphics and I love the lion in this movie to.

Definitely something for the whole family to watch on a movie night.

Hi Vincent,  When I was  in kindergarten, I first discovered that book.  I fell absolutely in love with it, and like you, it was the first few chapters that stuck in my memory the most.   I just ordered the hardcover signature edition of the book today, just for my own book collection, since it's my favourite story of all times.

The film was very well done....I really enjoyed it.  I'm glad your daughters and you got to see it...there are so many wonderful lessons in the story and I agree , the lion in the film was perfect.  Mr. Tumnus was always one of my favourite characters.....I always wanted to live in a cosy cave like his, with books and a fireplace and a teapot on a little shelf...and of course, special friends who drop in to hear stories.

Pat- This story was classic before it became a movie. Thanks for the heads up on Bella (I'm sure my kids will enjoy it).

Jo- I'm kind of bookworm myself. I enjoy collecting the classics as well. Thanks for checking out this post.

Danny- Movies like this one I could watch over and over again.

Bill & Barbara- Yes it was.

Nineteen years of excellence!
I loved these books when I was a kid. Was Aslan anything realistic or did he look like Samantha the teenage witches cat? Just wondering.

I agree this was a great movie! The effects were excellent! I became an avid reader in high school and that has carried through to this day. This is one book that escaped my voracious reading appetite. After seeing this movie I feel compelled to purchase this book and hopefully become absorbed by it. Thanks for your review. I would definitely recommend it for families (but probably not for the very young as some of the fight scenes may be a little too intense for the very young).

Rich- Thanks for the comment. Once you pick up the book you won't be able to put it down. I wouldn't be surprised if you read it cover to cover in one sitting!

Vincent ~  Certainly one of our family favorites!  This one was memorable, nicely done, and has a well known story of sacrifice and redemption.  I loved that series as a young child, and was pleasantly surprised that the movie was done so well!  :)

Sarah- Thanks for stopping by to comment. I loved the series as-well and have passed it on to my oldest daughter. She wasn't very excited at first... but once she started reading the first one the rest of them were eagerly picked up and read.
