Do You Need A Hand With That?

We frequently run into the need to do some heavy lifting in our business, whether it be moving some staging furniture into or out of homes, getting rid of some heavy junk, or doing some serious yard work. And if it isn't us, it's our clients or fellow agents who are faced with this.

Heavy LiftingI "retired" from the moving business many years ago, after a couple of episodes of helping friends move that resulted in pulled back muscles and smashed fingers. And the older I get, the less inclined I am to feel guilty for being unavailable when similar opportunities arise. But fortunately, we've found a great alternative to hiring expensive moving companies for smaller jobs.

Fort Collins is a college town - home to Colorado State University, with an enrollment of over 20,000 students, many of whom are large, well-muscled specimens in serious need of spending cash. And CSU makes finding strong backs very easy - the Student Employment Services office maintains a roster of students who are available for short-term temporary employment. And I'd guess that most other colleges and universities do the same.

We've been using CSU students for years for such things as staging assistance, clean-outs, general hauling, and heavy yard work. They have been, without exception, reliable and hard workers with great attitudes. We usually have 3-4 at a time we can call on, and a couple even have pick-up trucks. The going rate right now is around $10/hr. per student, plus lunch, and gas money if we're using their vehicles. And we usually throw in a decent tip - they almost always earn it.

The only caveat is that these guys are almost never skilled movers - they need some supervision, and if it's antiques or pianos, I'd go with the professionals.

Dick, there used to be a company College Painters locally that used students for work.  It is a great concept and students often need help making ends meet.

Dick- I'm going to check our local colleges for something like that.  Often my sellers just don't have the extra help to get things moved.

Hi Chris - Thanks for your comment. We have a local painting painting company that uses students, and also a moving company.

Hi Kathy - It's been a great resource for us, and those kids work really hard for their beer money.

This is a great idea in any town.  We have a lot of agents in our office with college-aged kids, so for at least a couple of years, we have a good supply of labor!

Dick:  As the father of two healthy young men, I know that what you right is FACT!  Our boys and there friends were always willing to help out for a few extra bucks and maybe a couple of cold Cokes on a hot day.  Your suggestion is a good one and I give it a big thumbs-up!  It gives these students a chance to earn some much-needed dollars ... and helps their moms and dads out too ...

Great post Dick, many of us live in college towns and could utilize the student pool.

Dick I have found myself in teh same position over the years, moving, cleaning,l fixing and such usually at the last minute of course. It would be great to have such a large pool of workers. i agree that who ever you hire, definately needs supervision. Especially moving

I love those boys with strong backs.  We frequently use them to assist Ron in the environmentally friendly trashouts!  And, they ARE worth every penny.  Good thinking, Dick.

What a cool resource to have handy.  I bet our local community college has something like this that I could tap into.

What a great idea.  I'm sure those college kids love the opportunity to make some extra cash.  And it saves your back.  I'm with you, I don't lift orpack or help move.
