Santa to Arrive Saturday After Thanksgiving Staff Reports Article Launched: Fairfield CT Citizen News 11/16/2007 10:13:29 AM EST
Mouth-watering hot chocolate, wreaths, holiday cards and flower pins, gingerbread house kits and so much more will be available at The Fairfield CT Chamber of Commerce's annual "Santa's Arrival."

Twenty community organizations will line up on the Sherman Green to sell an assortment of holiday items on Nov. 24. Santa Claus, played by Peter Christopher of Fairfield County Home Inspections, will arrive by hook-and-ladder down Reef Road at 10 a.m. He will be installed in the gazebo, where Peter Christopher will stay until 2:30 p.m. to listen to the wide-eyed wishes of anywhere from 500 to 600 children.

Beginning in 2002, the chamber invited town organizations and others to sell items to support their programs or benefit a charity. This year about 20 organizations will set up booths on the green to offer face painting, greeting cards, tickets or discounts to local events, house pins, poinsettias, music, ornaments and more. Several organizations will sell or give away holiday sweets, ranging from oversize cookies and other baked goods to candy and hot chocolate.

A portion of the proceeds from all participants will be donated to charity, and many of the organizations will use all of the money made at Santa's Arrival to further their own or other charitable causes.

Fairfield CT resident Trini Newquist and her daughters, Madeline and Katherine, will also prepare their homemade Gingerbread House kits. The kits, which contain pre-constructed gingerbread houses made with graham crackers and a variety of holiday candy to decorate the house, only require frosting to attach the candy. Proceeds from the kits sold under the auspices of the "Gingerbread General Contractors," Newquist's name for the informal venture will benefit the PT Barnum Pediatric Center at Bridgeport Hospital.

Members of the Shamrock Traditional Irish Music Society will reprise their role from last year to play CDs of traditional Irish holiday music. Students from the D'Valda & Sirico Dance & Music Centre will also perform.

New this year is a children's petting zoo that will be available between 10 a.m. and noon only. The animals will include sheep, goats, some bunnies and other appropriate barnyard animals.
