Google Panda Updates Return in 2012

By

Google announced last month that they will be resuming their series of Panda updates in 2012. If you want to make sure that your website isn't penalized there are three main things you should check.

Keyword Density

With the pressure that Panda has been putting on duplicate content, poorly worded and ungrammatical content and excessive keyword use, now is the time to check that your site is compliant with best practice. If you write good, informative content and keep your keyword density to 5% to 8% you should avoid being seen as spamming the system. Don't forget to put your keyword phrase in the first and last paragraphs as well.

Relevancy

Try to use keywords that are directly relevant to your business and location. Long-tail keywords are less competitive and will often rank highly. Using addresses and MLS numbers can also help if you are promoting a listing. Check for

Broken Links

Make sure that you go over all of your links and fix or delete any that are broken. When Google finds broken links they are apt to think that you are running a link farm to spam the system. If you take care of these three major issues your website should be in good shape to avoid any adverse effects of Panda updates.

Thanks Chris.  In general all of use should check our links to make sure they work.

Great points Chris and congrats on the feature. The broken link one is something that unless you have a checker you can easily forget about. Those that are on AR though (at least most) are serious about the system and shouldn't worry too much about their content... those that don't care and duplicate and spam are the ones that never read these types of blogs... HA... all the better for the rest of us, eh? Have an awesome day!

Chris, it's refreshing to run across someone on AR who actually acknowledges that on-page factors only paint a part of the picture for SEO ranking factors. There have been numerous purveyors of "SEO" on ActiveRain who for one reason or another downplay or place a cone of silence over the fact that a very large percentage of the ranking algorithm is from external sources from back-links to citations to brand recognition to social signals.

I don't think I've heard "Panda" before associated with Google, but all of the tips you give are great. Longtail is certainly the way to go.

I want to SELL your home, not LIST it!

Vanessa -You're welcome!

Dennis -I can only imagine how much work that caused.  I used to write articles for a content mill so I'm glad I don't do that any more.

Richard -It's hard enough to keep up if technology is your main interest, let alone a side issue to your "real" job.

Dave - Absolutely.  You can check your links with this application Xenu.

Tammy - I agree, most people on here should have good content, given the nature of the business.

Erica -Mine too!

Mike -For many people it IS their full-time job.

Dave - Exactly.  A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Eric - Google rolled out 6 Panda updates last year.

Kristi - Glad you found it useful.

Chris - I think I may have some broken links because of my IDX feed.  I guess I have something to look into.

I appreciate your letting us know about Google and the Panda.  I am guilty of not checking my links after make a post public.  How often should we check on our blogs for broken links?

Hi Chris - Keeping up-to-date on Panda releases as well as other search engine optimization issues and updating blogs and websites to take into account changes takes quite a bit of time.

Hi Chris, great information here. I amazes me sometimes, because when I make a link on AR, sometimes when I come back, it is broken. How does this happen? Now I just do the link in Google docs and transfer it over and it always stays that way.
