Change Happens – What You do About it is a Choice

“They always say time changes things,

but you actually have to change them yourself.”

Andy Warhol, American Printer

As I see it . . . . . . .

Change happens – what you do about it is a choice

Change can sweep into our life like the wind and change direction just as quickly.

Change can be embraced and brought into our life with open arms. Other times the change can be unexpected and cause a great deal of stress.

A reality of change is it’s always there and in most cases comes into our life unannounced.

A good example of change is the real estate and home building industry in 2006 and 2007 change sweep into the industry and there were two camps.

At the time I was consulting for companies in the real estate and home builders industries.

With one of the companies that I was consulting for I encouraged them to adjust their business model to survive the changing business environment. Cut the fat out of their budget, adjust or to eliminate the unproductive divisions, review and adjust their marketing.

They resisted all the suggestions.

The CEO questioned the length of the market down turn and asked what my option was. I explained that with that data and information that was available that the down turn would be long and painful and that it had the capacity to last several years.

He exploded and said the market will turn around within 3 to 6 months and the business model was fine. Needless to say that business did not survive the down turn and went out of business in about 18 months. The CEO made the choice of least resistance.

The same conversation was repeated with another CEO with different results.

The CEO of another company listened intensely questioned the information and the data. When we reviewed the information he understood why the market was in for a long term recovery.

He analyzed his company’s business model. Make the tough decisions to keep his company profitable and in business. The business when through a painful period and today the company is in business and as emerged as a stronger business.

Change comes into our life how we respond to change will make the difference.

Lou,  so true change happens, and it is our RESPONSIBILITY to deal with it in a professional and upbeat manner, in this business for sure!!  I got my license in 2008,,, so I did not have to go through alot of the changes of most.  But Real Estate is still changing all the time..  How do we best serve our clients in their current situation?  Almost a daily question.  Great post.  Best to you!

Lou, we need to accept that change is inevitable and we need to adapt our plan as we move along. The 1st CEO had the right info to make the correct decision but refused to accept it.

Lou, your example about CEO's who resisted the reality of a market downturn in their business reminds me of sellers of real property today. We all have the life we create by the choices we make. As always, your blog is filled with great insights!

Lou - nice post!  Change is a constant in our daily life, we can accept it and grow and profit through this or we can be left wondering what the heck happened.

Hi Lou, change happens to us all, and not just in real estate. Things that happen within our

families, an illness or a death, all change the course of our lives. My 29 year old niece

died 1 year ago, and her parents are still adjusting to it, I think of her all the time. As change

takes place we pray for the strength to go on.

Change will happen even if you dn't want it to.  What you do with it could change your life for the good or the bad.

I struggle with the word change, as I don't see that any of us really change. To me, the word is truely overused.
