What Do Portlanders Do in the Rain?
You might have heard that we get some rain here in Portland, and this last few weeks we've gotten more than in the entire month of December.
Having lived on Long Island, NY for my first 32 years, I can say that even though we do get rain, and our weather can get down into the freezing level, on average, our winters are fairly mild. Nope..no running out to my car to crank up the heat and defrosters while I ran back inside to finish getting ready. Wet...but mild. Hey, could be worse, while most of the country was blanketed with snow last year..we just had some wet stuff.
So what do Porlanders do in the rain? EVERYTHING!
I was chatting with my buyer this morning and she said, "ok, we're heading out for our walk", I mentioned that it just started pouring and she laughed. It's Portland. Folks are out riding bikes, jogging, boating, kayaking....life doesn't stop for mere rain.
I can remember when we first moved here and took the kids when they were young to Oaks Amusement Park in Sellwood. It had started to drizzle and I figured that all the rides would be shut down as they did in NY. Nope..rain or shine, that roller coaster still flipped people upside down.
I still shake my head when I pass the guys out there mowing the lawn in the pouring rain. Rain Smain, if it's your day, the rain doesn't stop your lawn from getting mowed. Life keeps moving in the rain here in Portland.
Now if you're looking to have some family fun and stay dry in Portland, then there are several fun places to go.
OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science & Industry), Right now you can check out the real specimans of the human body with 'The Body Worlds & the Brain" exhibition
Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum : With it's indoor water park and the Spruce Goose here, there is something for adult and child alike. It's a little drive from Portland, but a cool place to check out.
Sherwood Ice Arena: I will admit, it's been quite a while since I've gotten on ice skates. I do however love watching others glide effortlessly on the ice.
Oaks Park Roller Rink: One of the good ole fashion kind of rinks. Now THIS, I could probably do....even though it's been a while as well. Four wheels as opposed to one blade...yep..much better. Until the amusement park officially opens for the season in March, this is it.
There really are just so many things to do in Portland to beat off the rainy blahs. After all, nothing stops for the rain here in Portland!
Of course, there is the option of hangin in a nice warm comfy home! Oh..and if you're looking to find a home?..give me a call, I'd love to help you!
