Is it Real Estate or Workaholism?
Gayle Rich-Boxman writes an interesting and thought provoking post about how much time we work and when so we cross the line and become workoholics. Being Realtors, inspectors, home stagers most of us work to some degree 7 days a week.
I've been so busy I haven't had time to write a post in the last few days let alone spend time with my family. It's feast or famine and right now I'm busier than ever. If it were always like this I don't think my husband would like it. He understands balance and has no quilt relaxing or taking 2-3 vacations a year. I however, feel like you don't say no to a job ever even if it means running around like a chicken with your head cut off.
I'm sure many of us can relate to Gayle's post and it would be interesting to see how you feel about it and what suggestions you have on how you balance work and family/play time.
Is it Real Estate or Workaholism?
I have a husband who works really hard and all of the time. He decided that after a particularly long and trying series of changes at his job that he would take a “few days off and be home”. Well, that has entailed all of the projects that he feels needed to be done on those days off, that he hadn’t gotten to.
I was envisioning actually SEEING him and maybe spending some relaxing time TOGETHER. The “together” time involved being outside cleaning frozen leaves and dead flowers in 34 degree (albeit dry) temperatures for most of yesterday! I did get a few pool games out of him before I made dinner. And otherwise, he’s been working on STUFF. And I have continued to do my real estate.
So, that made me think. Do we, as realtors actually take days off? I try, but I don’t, really. Unless you have a partner that you’re not in a relationship with to cover for you, it seems like we work ALL OF THE TIME.
Is workaholism a good thing or just another addiction?
I’m a big believer in Work Hard Play Hard. But, when your spouse is addicted to work (and wears it like a badge as a 2nd generation workaholic), it makes you feel like you’re slacking off if you don’t keep going like your partner/spouse does.
I don’t want to be one of those people who gives in and gets lazy. Those of us in this industry, who are still making money, haven’t gone that route. BUT…doesn’t there come a time where you have to/need to enjoy your loved ones, take a breather, enjoy the fruits of your labor and just STOP???
Especially considering what has happened in the last few years in our real estate realm, you almost feel compelled to push through it because there are so many who haven’t continued in their careers in real estate, not out of choice, but out of necessity. And yet, BALANCE, rewarding yourself for the hard work, saying THANK YOU to yourself is so important and also taking time to recharge, rejuvenate because no one on their death bed will say, “I wish I’d WORKED more.”
