"Don't Trust Anyone" Says My Son - What is "Trust" to Me?

What is "Trust" to me?

At breakfast this morning in our typical morning rush to get our kids out the door and on the bus, out of nowhere my son says, "I don't trust nobody."

Rather than instruct him on proper grammar, everything suddenly stopped and I asked, "whys that?" "Well, that's what someone on TV said."

Back to the haste, the eggs were now WELL DONE, we began to talk about that a little.

"First of all, what is TV?"  I asked. "Fake" he says. Well enough!

As I child I recall my mother telling me, "son, you must trust and have faith". There was more to the conversation at the time but those words stuck with me. At the time I didn't really know what that meant nor did I really care to be honest. As I grew older though, I found myself in many situations where I would recall my mother's words. I could write a book on that quote.

There are people out there in this world you just cannot trust, no doubt. You can often spot these people a mile away. But, I tend to trust people, albeit sometimes cautiously, until proven otherwise. Once I lose that trust, I have a very difficult time regaining it. But I have faith in mankind. I always remember my mother's words, and I do have faith, in people and in God.

I remember asking her about God and how do we know he's really there if we can't see him? She said "trust me, you can't see electricity either, but I guarantee if you stick your finger in that light socket, you'll know it's there!" I never forgot those words either as I found out for sure later on in life, being the handyman and tinkering around with stuff kinda guy I am!

I recall Ronald Reagan saying to Mikhail Gorbachev, "Trust but verify". Love that quote! Here's one of my own, "trust people, albeit sometimes cautiously, until they do you wrong."

So my words to my son, "son, you must trust and have faith". Of course I added my own comments to that quote, as he grabbed his backpack and headed out the door to the bus and said, "OK, love you, bye!"

"Trust me, you can't see electricity either, but I guarantee if you stick your finger in that light socket, you'll know it's there!"

That is profound. And hard to argue with.

Mitch~what a terrific post this is. Very well written and God bless your mom, what a smart lady. She'd be so proud of you. And, the fact that you took the time during a busy morning to tackle a really important topic and thus give a powerful lesson to your son is remarkable.

Thank you, Mitch for writing this!

Hi Mitch, This is a great post and I, too, loved the line about not being able to see electricity but knowing it is there.  You are passing a valuable lesson learned from your mother on to your son.  Precious!
