Been away from AR for awhile as I was preparing for this past weekend. Wow, what a weekend. If I had a comfort zone going into it. It got blown up the past three days.
I just spent the weekend in Atlanta, Georgia working on my presentation skills with a real pro.
What a comfort zone busting experience that was.
For two days I stood in front of a video camera in my coach's living room and had everything
from my posture to my program content turned upside down, inside out and backwards.
It wasn't a place for the faint of heart, or an ego.
But, what came out of this experience has changed me forever. I will never be the same. My comfort zone has expanded and my belief in my value to the world and to this community has exploded, so look out. Don't worry what I mean just yet, you'll be learning more about that as the details evolve.
The true purpose of this post is to ask you about your comfort zone. I believe our comfort is the number one enemy of achieving unlimited success.
What have you done lately to stretch your comfort zone?
If you can't come up with something automatically, I challenge you do decide on doing one thing
between now and New Year's Day that will stretch you. I guarantee it will make you a better person
and a better professional.
So, to reward those that really go for it and do something different, our panel of judges here at the Business Achievement Gym will vote on the best story (it better be real 'cause we'll be calling for verification). Post your comfort zone busting activity and its results below.
Skip, you know, i was JUST THINKING about the comfort zone i'm in. There are things i have not done because i've allowed my own limitations to thwart me.....but i DO NOT plan on staying here!
One thing i can say though, is that "blogging" on Active Rain has taken me WAY OUT of the comfort zone i used to be in! Prior to AR i never blogged! Now, i can't seem to SHUT UP!!! (By the way i am NOT posting this to enter into the "comfort zone busting contest") I merely wanted to comment after i saw your post.
I'm glad to have heard of your success though - were you super shy before? Thank you for sharing!
Diane,
When I was a child I was terribly shy but grew out of it as an adult.
My post really wasn't about being shy, it was about putting myself
in a position that was going to open me to evaluation, criticism and
feedback.
I find few people in the real estate profession are open to that
type of comfort zone busting.
I've been speaking, training and coaching for 6 years now and my
business is doing well, I'm in the top 10% of coachies revenue and
income, but the past two years I've hit a plateau.
In evaluating my business I realized that the best way for me to
grow my business is to raise the bar on my speaking and presentation
skills.
And, I believe those in the professions that AR serves can do the same
if they would be willing to put themselves on the line by practicing
and role playing their presentation skills, networking skills, closing skills,
interviewing skills, etc.
So, Diane, how specifically have you allowed your comfort zone to get
in the way of you getting to the next level?
Anna,
No doubt you did something spectacular that few Americans would ever consider. I think imigrants coming to the US do it much more frequently than the othe way around. I met a woman last year who did the same thing as you. She was a little older, probably 25, when she came from Russia to the US. She put herself through college, received a degree in accounting and is now a comptroller for a large non-profit agency in my area.
I commend you and you have my sincerest respect for making that transformation. I'm certain it has served you well as you built your business. Congratulations and thank you for teaching us all something about stretching ourselves, what I did this weekend was nothing compared to your journey, but is an area real estate professionals I've worked with really struggle.
Good job. Discomfort is in the middle of self realization. Once you get comfortable with the discoimfort you create a new reality and bang you are better for it.
Congratulations
Chris,
Tell me more about what you mean by 'wanting the experience I had'?
I'm sure you can, if you're open to looking for the right opportunity and putting
yourself in the right position.

While these are not my words, they are the words of an amazing rock song that conveys my wish to you on this eve of a New Year.
Happy New Years!
