Athletes know that if they are going to compete in any kind of event they have to train for it. While reading How Running A Marathon Is Like Buying A Home by Bob and Richelle Ward, the post got me thinking. Not only does an athlete have to train, they must also have the proper equipment. The equipment also has to fit them properly and be appropriate for the sport in which they are participating. To put this in simple terms: you can’t play hockey with a baseball bat!
The same is true in the real estate business. As a buyer or seller your “equipment” is your real estate agent and, like the athlete you need to make sure you and your agent are a good fit. Does your agent listen and understand your needs? Do you feel comfortable having this person coordinate one of the most important transactions in a persons life? Again, like the athlete you need to make sure you have the proper equipment for your “sport”. For example, if you’re buying commercial properties you need an agent trained for that. If you’re selling your home, you want a top-notch marketing (listing) agent not one who specializes in working with buyers. If you are buying foreclosures your agent should be well-versed in the ins and outs of the offer, counter-offer and contract process when dealing with Asset Managers or Lender/Sellers.
How do you know you’re getting the right equipment for the job and that it’s going to fit you? Don’t be afraid to ask someone you know for a recommendation. The highest compliment a former client can pay is to refer me to a friend or family member and a large portion of our business does come from referrals. Whether you find an agent in the yellow pages, online or as a referral from a friend, don’t hesitate to spend some time interviewing them and ask for references.
Take the time to make sure you get a good fit and you’ll be sprinting for the finish line!
