The Power of Social Media

The Power of Social Media

I discovered first hand the power of social media. I recently posted on facebook that my daughter was looking for a job. To my amazement, there were The Power of Social Mediaresponse with at least 4 job possibilities and in 1 case, the sender called the person looking to hire and sent us his number.

I have heard and do realize the power and influence of social media. But this was the first time I actually experienced its power personally. The effects of this network were remarkable. All 4 of the leads came from folks I know and who know me, but we speak face to face less than one time per year, if even that. I would never have called, mentioned or referred to my daughter needing a job had we talked face to face.

How do you feel about social media? Are you embracing it? As with all cultural shifts, there is good and bad to what is occurring. If social media prevents you from having face to face conversations with the people right in front of you, then it has become detrimental. But in the case of my example, the positive side of social media is great.

The reality of social media has helped me reconnect to friends I have not seen for years. I have learned more about family and interest than I would have in a 10 minute conversation. It has been invaluable in my business. I do enjoy it, but have had to find ways that it does not rule my life.

My daughter was offered a job through this referral network. It was wonderful. The irony is it forced her to decide whether to take the job or to move closer to a friend in upstate New York. She has opted to move to New York. As parents, we encouraged her to do this.

Have you experienced the power in social media?

750 million Facebook viewers for instance is a lot of horsepower for eyeballs to catch, consider and call you about. Plus if they are following you on line, they figure any kid of yours will be honest, hardworking, sincere. Just what is not easy to find in the work force as work ethic becomes a rare comodity from spoiled kids that don't want to really work or know how to when it comes right down to it.

Cal, Great story! I really enjoy SM platforms, it allows me to get caught up with people who I enjoy put wouldn't necessarily call on a regular basic. Good stuff.

Call, what great news for your daughter!  I enjoy keeping in touch with family members who live far away (even playing Words with Friends with my Grandma).  I think it depends on your expectations of the platform and how you yourself use it.  I personally don't post things like "had a great Starbucks coffee today" but to each their own.  I hope your daughter gets a job soon!  --Krystal

This is fantastic, and I love the story.  But what I really want to know is the trick you used to get the block on your post.  Spill the beans, buddy. :)))

Andy, I hear you. To have young people who are responsible, good work ethic, want to do a good job, and possess skill is a great asset to any employer. My daughter would have done a remarkable job if she had decided to take it.

Adrian, I agree that it is a really cool way to stay connected to folks who you may actually never see or speak with on a normal basis. So I really like the groups function on facebook.

Krystal, she will find something in New York. She actually wants to work for a shelter up there, but will need to wait until something opens up.

Mimi, I am not sure what you mean by the block on my post. I am using the new timeline and I simply did a print screen, pasted to paint, saved as a jpeg file, and then cropped it. I uploaded it as a picture into the post. Is that what you mean or something else? Let's actually go to the coffee shop in Lititz called Spill the Beans and we can discuss it. :)

For certain things it definitely pays to put it out there on social media.  I hope your daughter finds the job she wants!
