An Opinion From the New Generation NATIVE AMERICAN On Celebrating Thanksgiving Day....

Interviewing Keila Gordon

Response: "Why should I be thankful for my ancestors being killed, taken from their land & ...then given only a few acres to live on?

We rebuilt our culture from scratch and the same people that tore it down would now would like to put their hand in our cookie jar aka: our successes. The same people are trying to take out the Casinos.

Non Native Americans think we still live on the Rez (Reservation), wearing moccasins and live in Tee-Pees.

Asked why do you feel that this has anything to do with you now? That was in the past & should stay there...

Response: (GLARE!!).. Why should I care that George Washington was President, it was history & should stay there. You were born, that was history & you should stay there.

Asked what are your thoughts on celebrating Thanksgiving Day?

Response: I don't celebrate it! I think you should be thankful everyday. Seems like Native American Culture should be celebrated & much more of an awareness of the culture itself. November should be Native American Month. We have given other cultures a full month of celebrations, why not Native American history month? As well as educating people of how Native Americans live today. The Elders have been taught to give & not ask nor expect anything back. The new generation though, is learning to speak up for our rights. We have more Native American politians, leaders, educators & people that improve society than ever before. That is a wonderful achievement. We need to make society more acceptable & understanding to the new Native American generation. The history of Native Americans is the same but the way we celebrate it can change. It is up to us to make a difference & celebrate diversity.

In closing...

This was a great interview experience with a young lady.

I look forward to more interviews with her on HOUSING, education, employment, finance, and whatever else we come up with.

Hey Diane,

The lady you interviewed has many very valid points and I agree with her considerably. It was/is a shame what the "white man" did to the native Americans, just like what we use to do to with slavery. Unfortunately there isn't anything we can do to change the past except to more consious about the future and our actions.
