Being Number 2

By
Real Estate Attorney with Bay Vista Realty BK671311

It is kinda funny that I am here on this website and I see all of these people doing different things for points.  I Have spent most of my life being number two.  In the State of Florida I was 1st Runner up for the Non-Commissioned Officer of the year for the Florida Army National Guard.  In high school I was second string Pitcher, in college I was second in the class.

At one point one of my buddies made the comment that 2nd place is the same as first loser.  I stand to correct him today.   2nd place is the guy who hasn't gotten complacent.  2nd place is the guy who still has to try.  2nd place is the guy who made it past 3rd and is heading for home.

I have always been 2nd best somewhat by design.  It was early in my life when my grandfather told me that in life you always need someone to look up to and try to emulate.  The day you become that someone you have to pick someone new, someone else, and someone bigger and better than yourself.

For right now, I am still just trying to be one third of the man he was.  To me, he was the best.  2nd to none.

Well, i was very proud of my being #1 in TN for so long.  Jim Lee just passed me by.  I can say that the reason I slid to #2 is that I was too busy to get on here.  It's o.k. - I've got something to shoot for now!  I'm definitely one that prefers to be chasing something than to be chased.   :o)

What I think is great is that you show contentment without complacency. Contentment is being happy where you are, and happiness is what we all really want anyway isn't it? There are arguments for being #1, and not being happy. That doesn't mean that I think that anyone shouldn't still shoot for #1,.. just keep realistic short term goals.

I don't think we measure people #1 in points any more than #1 in production. It's their philosophy, their way of dealing with people, their goals - they have to be good at what they do, of course, but it's really about who we'd like to spend time with, and who we think would best please our clients when we refer them.

If you are running your company and business to the best of your capacity, with respect for your fellow competitors, and happy to get started everyday than where you rank doesn't matter as much as how you make people feel.  That is what they remember most.  Making them and others feel like number 1 is way more important.
