Craig's List & Malicious Behavior

Anyone have any Craig's List horror stories?

I've spent much of the last two days putting out fires for one of my lovely Realtor clients that all came through Craig's List. And not through any of her own ads we had been posting.

First thing Thanksgiving morning, my poor client started getting phone call upon phone call non-stop. People were calling asking about a ridiculous ad for house for rent and petsitting for only $200/mo. And these had nothing to do with the property ads we had regularly been posting on a regular basis for many months now.

Apparently someone was posting bogus ads on Craig's List, but not by hacking her own account like I originally though. They were posting ads on thier own with "too good to be true" pricing for rents or house-sitting fees, and then using her name name and phone numbers (not to mention these ads had horrible grammar and misspellings).  I found two of the offending ads posted local market area and had them flagged and reported for harassment and abuse. Luckily they were removed shortly after I reported them and I had though crisis had been averted.

Well today she told me she was still getting calls and now they are from all over the place. Not only was someone posting these bogus ads in her own area, but in random cities all over the country! I was finally able to find a few more offending ads to flag and report the abuse. And after a quick email to abuse@craigslist.org, they were able to find any more similar ads that I may have missed and have had them removed.

My poor Realtor client is frazzled and wants nothing more to do with Craig's List ever again. Unfortunately it looks like something like this can easily happen to anyone whether they post on there or not. I will never understand how people can do something so mean and malicious to someone for no reason at all.

Whoever did this had way too much time on their hands, or they had an "ax to grind" with your client.   It's such a shame that people do negative things like this, when they could use the same amount of energy to do something positive for themselves and others.

I haven't had any problem thank goodness.  I guess someone has to try and ruin everything.

One more example of some people's malicious spirit.  Unfortunately stories like this will dissuade people from taking advantage of another source for business.  I've never had any trouble with Craigs list, but now I am wary!

I often browse the net to see exactly where my company is postioned in the Google search. One day I saw a Craig's list listing in a community I work heavily. It was a FSBO and they had pirated pictures I had taken of the community and put it with their ad. I called Craig's list and they immediately took it off> ;-)

They do act very quickly to remove any malicious or pirated material

Another reason to be vigilant. I still wouldn't let that stop me from using their services though.

Hi Megan~ That is totally awful! I've never heard of such abuse. And wouldn't be able to recommend any advice either. It sounds like you were able to accomplish alot though getting them removed.

What are the repercussions for someone who does this? It seems like someone who is jealous or could it be just a childhood prank?

Your poor client, that is so sad that someone has nothing better to do than set up someone for harassment.

This is just as ludricious as people that send you computer viruses.  They don't know who they are hurting they just get their jollies sending their hate over the internet to innocent unsuspecting people.

It was awful and I feel so bad about it.  I almost feel like it was my fault because I suggested and encouraged posting ads on to Craig's List. I've never had a problems with them before.

I don't know if someone has an axe to grind or not. I do know that I had seen posts in the housing section of that market area from a disgruntled citizen that was very anti-Realtor and kept posting in there telling them "craig's list is only for FSBOs" (they must have failed to look at every other city's craig's list to see that it was quite the contrary). Though there is no way to ever tell if that was the person. It is only a suspicion.

I'm looking into if there are any repercussions for such action. One of the violations in Craig's List terms of use states:

a. If you post a message that (1) impersonates any person or entity; (2)
falsely states or otherwise misrepresents your affiliation with a person or
entity; or (3) that includes personal or identifying information about
another person without that person's explicit consent, you agree to pay
craigslist one thousand dollars ($1,000) for each such message.

Now, who knows if they actually follow up with any sort of action like this, but it would seem to indicate some possibilty that they are able to track someone's IP address or something. Emails sent to Craig's list about this have not been answered.

I love CL and am not happy to hear about this happening to anyone.  I certainly hope that it's an isolated incident, and that your Realtor client gives CL another chance in the future.

I have not heard of this happening in our area. We use Craiglist all the time and have been fortunate to have positive results. Something like this would not cause me to refrain from using them. Hopefully, they will be able to find out who did it and make them face the repercussions they deserve.

Megan,

Some of these nuts take advantage of the open listing sites and forums and for their personal satisfaction try to mess up legitimate postings. It's going to stay with us, whether we like it or not. Looks like Craigs List police reacted pretty quick.

As many have mentioned, there is the PG rated mentality that sees things like this as terribly funny.  Whenever we put our information out there, we are vulnerable.

Was your client able to make any lemonade from this in her area when people called?
