If Ever Anyone Needed a Lift...It Was Then

By
Real Estate Agent with Liberty Homes RS-#62825

I was going through a tough time the other day and I needed a little time and space to regroup.  It wasn’t something to share with everyone when a mental breakdown was occurring. What one person may go through may seemingly be a ‘nothing’ to another although a personal turmoil means something to each individual who is going through it.

I’m so grateful that I have the ability to recognize that whatever the situation or circumstance there are learning lessons in all. I rested and regrouped and everything was fine the next day.

Back at the office:   While chatting with my Broker In Charge and another former agent, a young man walks into the office. I asked if I could help him and he said, “I just came back from Afghanistan and I wanted to come in and tell you how sorry I am for making your life a living hell before I left”.

For the life of me, I could not remember his name or how he made me miserable. I asked him his name and he said "so and so" was my fiancé.  IT CLICKED IMMEDIATELY and I told him I remembered him.

He stepped right up to me and handed me a good luck bamboo plant and said, “I just had to come by the office and see you. I needed to tell you how sorry I am for being so mean to you right before I left”.  I mumbled an "awwwwww" and said thank you while I hugged him. His eyes had watered..so did mine. He again muttered a 'sorry' and walked out.

I was moved.

At that moment everything fell into place.

No matter how much I think I'm going through something awful there is always someone who is going through something more.  There is always someone out there that needs a hug or to make peace within.

I don’t know what the circumstances were for this young man to think of me throughout his time in Afghanistan. Maybe he just saw our sign and immediately felt the need to apologize to me and make amends. Whatever the reasons, little does he realize that I needed a lift too.

I needed a kind word from someone that day.

I needed to give back a hug to someone who needed it too.

Funny how life always seems to balance out sometimes.

Wow, what a nice story!  It's amazing how two people can help each other by doing so little.

Sally: Even when our clients are giving us a very difficult time, there are usually reason(s) behind it that have nothing to do with us. I am glad that he felt it important enought to make amends and it sounds like his timing was perfect.   We all have good and bad days, especially in this business. We are dealing with so many different people, who are themselves facing so many things. Even the equity seller who elects to move can put themselves into such a stressful situation - and so often we bear the brunt of a lot of that stress.

Be well, be happy. I believe that most of our clients are like your young soldier. They do truly appreciate our efforts - even if they can't express it. Good for you and good for him!

Sally that is some story.  Sometimes when we need a lift it can come from unexpected places.  An apology is better late than never.

This resonates with me now. You can never know nor can judge because you do not know what is going on in that person's world. Their whole foundation could have just been changed.

Hi Sally, what a great story. Sounds like he had a lot of time to do some deep thinking and promised that if he made it out alive he would go to each person and apologize.

This is such a great message - pretty cool how the universe often sends us just what we need in the most unexpected ways.

i've had two moments over the past ten years where two different situations between myself and two different people literally haunted me. i could not come to peace with things until i apologized for my part. one accepted, the other did not. but the act of making an effort to let them know i was sorry released me and the one who accepted was shocked that i even still thought about it. never again will i underestimate the power of an apology.

Sally--What a great story. It is ironic how he carried this with him for so long and felt the need to reach out to you when you needed it too. :)

Looks like Afghanistan put something in perspective for him, too. It's too bad more people don't realize they've done something wrong and went back to make amends, needed or not.

Something Sally must have gnawed inside of him about you while in Afghanistan and maybe the thought of life is short came to his mind. Glad it had such a nice happy ending though.

Wow, Sally, who can imagine what a profound experience this fellow must have had in Afghanistan to cause him to pause and reflect on his past deeds.  I like to think I'm reasonably composed, but that would have definitely caused me to tear up.  Thank you for sharing this heartwarming story!

It is a beautiful story Sally and the gift it gave to both of you was immense.  I cannot imagine what it was like for him over there, but something good happened to have him make any amends he thought he should make and really it does not matter why.  Blessings to him and to you.
