More than 279,000 federal employees, including members of the military, collectively owed approximately $3.42 Billion in unpaid taxes as of Sept. 25, 2010, up 3.26 percent from the prior year, according to a recently released report from the Internal Revenue Service.

The annual Federal Employee/Retiree Delinquency Inventory showed that among them are 36 aides to President Obama, according to ABC News, who collectively owed $833,970.

Congress too had its share of tax delinquents, with 217 employees at the Senate owing a total of $2,134,501, while 467 employees at the House owed $8,535,974.

The U.S. Postal Service was the agency with the most employees with delinquent taxes. There 25,640 employees owed close to $270 million, according to Washington, D.C., radio station WTOP. The military came came next, with 29,482 members of the active duty military owing over $111 million, and 31,299 members of the military reserve and National Guard owing $228,836,638.

At the Environmental Protection Agency, 413 people owed $19,473,477, while at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., 185 employees owed $3,155,313.

At the Treasury Department, home of the IRS, 1,181 employees had delinquent taxes amounting to $9,303,278. At the Justice Department, 2,069 employees owed $17,662,076 in back taxes. Five employees at the U.S. Tax Court owed $62,508.

This is not one of those projected or estimated numbers. This is directly from the books. All owed taxes are existent and not made up. Why are they not being collected? I know someone who was threatened with a house lien for a mistake made that amounted to $200. I would be all for exempting any of our military serving overseas to be exempt. Putting their lives on the line is good enough for me.

We just had our taxes done... and will pay our usual 33% ... or four months of the year's work, to have the right to be an American, and there are many in Congress who think we should pay more??? Thanks to our accountant who shared this with us. It got my goat!

I don't know what to say.  If in fact that is true something needs to be done ASAP!

Kathy, Apparently all the insiders are aware this is true and as one commenter online said, the number just grows every year.

Apparently we need to look to the government itself when talking about "paying our fair share." If you're old enough to remember the cartoon Pogo Possum. (I believe that's how Walt Kelly spelled it.) Pogo uttered a parody on a general's famous words. The Pogo version: "We have met the enemy and he is us!"

How depressing!
