Finding the right neighborhoodOne of the most important considerations in planning your move is to find the right neighborhood for you and your family. Beyond the practicalities and aesthetics of your new home, there are important points to consider about the area you're looking at possibly moving to.

Here is a checklist of 12 points to consider:

  1. How close is it to your place(s) of employment, entertainment and shopping for your needs.
  2. How close is it to a hospital and medical facilities?
  3. Are there more homeowners than renters?
  4. Are there quality schools with high standards?
  5. Is there daycare available close by?
  6. Is there an active neighborhood watch program?
  7. How well-maintained are the other properties in the neighborhood?  Do they look well cared for?
  8. Are property values appreciating or depreciating?  What is the trend of the past year?
  9. Do you have easy access to mass transit?
  10. Is there adequate police and fire protection?
  11. Are the traffic patterns reasonably flowing?  Is there a lot of "short cut" traffic?
  12. What is the proximity to the community center, trails, parks and recreational facilities?
