A little history
The house has been on the market and has not sold. The owners have moved on to their new, custom home in Asheville, NC. And, their wonderful Realtor knew that the house needed a professional opinion, so she called me in as a Westchester County home stager and interior decorator, to get my take.
What the house really needed was a fresh pair of eyes. While most of the furnishings were already gone, there were two sectionals and armoires that still remained. The Brazilian cherry floor in the dining room, a wonderful architectural feature, was hidden by too many oversized pieces to hide the scratches and improper finishing, closing up the space. Italianate faux finishing could be found throughout the house and a very worn carpet in an upstairs bedroom was completely uninviting.
The plan
Make the most of our limited budget. Paint, declutter, refinish the floors and use what I had left strategically throughout the house, showcasing the most difficult room to furnish.
My painters painted over some very taste specific and dark walls, to both lighten and brighten up the house. This was most important in the entry way where the walls were done in a faux brick pattern. My movers moved stuff out, shlepped stuff back, and transported things from one room to the next, until I was satisfied. And finally, The Flooring Girl, and her crew worked their magic. Rather than replacing the old bedroom carpet, they ripped it up and refinished the oak floor, to show potential buyers that hardwood is in fact, underneath all the bedroom carpeting. And in the dining room, they did an excellent job on the exotic brazilian cherry-exfoliating and re-polying back to new life and lustre.
Voila!! The Realtor and I think the house looks great and we’re both looking forward to the broker open house. Here are a few before and afters:
