Being a Realtor can be one of the most rewarding and highest paying jobs in the world. My old real estate broker used to tell me "Real estate can either be the highest paying easy job or the lowest paying difficult job". One of the major aspects of succeeding in the real estate business is time management. Now just to be clear, you cannot actually manage time, you can only manage the space between two points in time. The problem is that most of us are not very good managers of that space.

Many of us find it very easy to stroll into the office in the morning and start our daily task of convincing ourselves that we are busy. This process typically starts at the beginning of our real estate career. We really don't know what to do, instead we find things to do. Even unimportant things can become pivotal points of our day. I can vividly remember my planner:

9:00 Check email (as if someone was going to email me anything that would make me money)

11:00 Lunch with Greg (it would have been OK if Greg was not my other friend in real estate)

1:00 Check email and return calls (really meant forward jokes, and call to interrupt other peoples day)

3:00 Start collecting data for my FSBO packet (this was one of the favorite "getting ready, to get ready" tasks of other unsuccessful agents, I figured I had better try it too)

5:00 Return home from a long day at the office (at least that is what I would tell my wife, so she did not think I had it easy)

The scary part is that eventually I started to believe that my workday was actually difficult. While I was trying to convince others about how many hours I was putting in and how stressful my day was, I actually started to believe my own line of crap.

What lines are you feeding yourself? What unimportant things are you making important, just to believe your busy? The answers to these questions can move you one step closer to achieving the success that you deserve as a real estate professional.

Eric, you are right. Especially any of us who came from a 9-5 job...We don't get paid in real estate, just to show up. We get paid when we sell something. Great post.

Eric you could be right, but Real Estate is for most people a part time job and they really don't care about time management. I am a full time agent and wish I had a time managemnet problem as the market has slowed so much now I have too much time.

This is a good wake-up call for so many agents. It's so easy to think we are busy that we even fooled ourselves. What you mentioned is so real. I was once in this stage and I had to pull myself out. From then on, I really SERIOUSLY evaluate the things I do and if it would make a difference to my bottom line 30, 45 and 90days from then.
