Three Must Do’s for a Happier Career (and Life!)

By Julie Escobar

I love what I’m seeing out there these days.  More mentoring.  Less territorialism.  More solution seeking.  Less moaning and groaning.  More passion for the people – on our teams, in our organizations, in our list of happy clients and customers, in our lives!  Passion is a tremendous differentiator – and I believe the common denominator amongst those entrepreneurs who not only make it to the top and stay there – but LOVE what they do each day.

If that’s you – KUDOS!  You are an inspiration to so many people in an industry – that frankly – could use more inspiration!  If it’s not you – it’s time to fuel up on the good stuff that can reignite your passion for what you do.  Our careers take up the majority of our days (and sometimes nights) – so you might as well enjoy it right?

  1. Put YOU on the to-do list.  That’s right.  Block personal time to decompress, have lunch with a friend, read a book, indulge in a little retail therapy, play with your kids, etc.  I’ve always been a firm believer in the idea of ‘put the oxygen mask on yourself first, then help someone else.’  You can’t be your personal best for the people in your life if you’re neglecting your own health and well-being.  That’s tough to do, I know.  Especially for a lot of moms and dads out there.  We’re taught to be kids first, kids first – and that’s noble, but not always healthy.  One of the best things we can do for our kids is to be healthy, happy and whole.  Model that behavior for them by striking the balance and you’ll give them a tremendous gift that will help them become stronger, more fulfilled adults.
  2. LAUGH.  Go ahead.  Out loud.  It’s good for the heart and the soul – and your business.  There’s a lot of ‘Debbie Downers’ out there these days. Do you think people want to hang out with the doomsday crowd?  Uh-uh.  Keep your spirit lifted by fueling it with laughter.
  3. Infuse your business life with what you LOVE.  Virginia Munden is a dynamite example of this.  My friend LOVES to share her passions and inspirations.  She brings them with her into her social media, her client meetings, her training sessions, her friendships and her life.  From gorgeous shoes to inspired tidbits from her Italian father to nurturing the relationships in her life.  The real estate stuff?  Takes care of itself because new clients, customers and referrals are drawn to her like magnets.  Love that!  Other friends are passionate about fitness, some about humor, some about cooking, some about their niche.   Whatever it is – bring it with you.  It will make your days so much fuller and happier and believe it or not – more successful!

So go for it!  It’s Valentine’s week after all!  Treat yourself.  Take care of yourself.  And go ahead.  Have a piece of chocolate.  I’m a caramel center fan myself!  YOU?

And if you need help?  Call us.  We’re here to make your life easier, your job easier, your headaches fewer!  Our inside account management team rocks and they’ll take good care of you!  Call them today at 866.405.3638!  See you soon!

Sound advice Julie. I've been trying to take a similar approach for years now. I'm not sure how successful I am (more so on some occasions that others) but I'm pretty sure the end result is that I am a happier, more contented person than I could be if I decided to wallow in the mud with so many others. Thanks for the reminder.

Yesterday was my first 'sick' day in 7 years and it was fabulous! Putting 'me' first was the best professional decision I've ever made :)
