Thankful Thursday – Yellowstone National Park Roberta Kayne @ Yellowstone

I am thankful for many things, but today I am  expressing my thanks to my partner, Martin Phillips, for convincing me to go with him to Yellowstone National Park in the winter for a winter photo workshop.

I don't like being cold – so the last place I wanted to go in the middle of an Ohio winter was to somewhere that promised to be even colder.  But I managed to buy some wonderful warm clothes to wear, including Nike "thermal underwear" which was unbelievably warm, a few pairs of  gloves, but I ended up borrowing a pair of warm gloves from a fellow photographer who I met on the trip, great warm insulated boots from Khombu (similar to Sorel), an insulated ski-type jumper, and my down coat.  And to top it off, I wore hand warmers on my hands and feet – and those were fabulous!  As you can see, I look like an Eskimo (or the Michelin man).

Yellowstone was in the 20s the week we were there, and it was snowing and windy.  But I was dressed warm, and really did enjoy myself.  I was able to capture a few good photos, despite the weather and my camera lens breaking (the zoom stopped zooming near the end).

Here are a few pictures that I took of a coyote who was pacing back and forth along the shore of a river, apparently trying to decide how to get to the dead elk on the other side.  He then decided to chance it and swim across the river to get a few bites in of the elk.

What a wonderful opportunity.  If you ever get the chance to go to Yellowstone in the winter, I'd say do it!  I don't regret it, and I'm happy and thankful not only that I went but that I was able to enjoy it and come back with some good photos….which I will be sharing here from time to time.

Wow those are great pictures.  That must have been the trip of a lifetime.  You deserved a hot drink afterward.

I feel the same way you do about being cold, and would much rather head south!  But how wonderful that you took a chance and have this wonderful trip to remember.

Hi Roberta, Your outfit certainly looked like you were warn enough but at 20 degrees, it had to still feel cold. Your photos are so wonderful and I would

certainly have endured the cold to be able to capture  such beauties. Well done! PS, Sorry to hear about your lens. Maybe repairable?

Norma, thanks so much for your compliment on my pictures!  My fingers and toes were occasionally cold but I had on two pairs of gloves and I used handwarmers in between the gloves and my hands and those were a lifesaver !  And I used the handwarmers inside my boots by my toes so my feet were dry and warm. And I also wore two pairs of socks too!

Joetta I am glad that I took a chance on going.

Tony and Darcy - thanks for the kudos on my photos. Glad you enjoyed Yellowstone!

Myrl , thank you for the feature!!  Wow!  I'm flattered and appreciative. You must go to Yellowstone :-)  By the way that was a coyote.

William - yes I was warm but it was definitely cold there - no doubt about it.  We got so much snow and wind that they closed the roads into the park for the first time in 10 years...  I am looking into trying to get my lens repaired and hope I don't have to buy a new one.

Bob, I am honored...  Thank you for the compliment and the feature!

Paul, it's my pleasure to share these photos with such a great and appreciative group of people!  Thank You!

I live in Wyoming and even I wasn't aware of the winter opportunites in Yellowstone - Neat!  Love the pictures you got - even if you had been miserable (which you weren't) it would all have been worth it for such great shots!

Hi Brenda, If you live in Wyoming, you must get to Yellowstone in the winter.  It is really beautiful and worth battling the cold.
