Should You Get Your Real Estate License in 2012?  (Or 16.5 Ways To Earn $$ in the Real Estate World This Year)

I know what you're thinking....."why on earth would anyone decide to get a Real Estate license now?"

The new semester at The South Jersey Real Estate Academy began last week and it caused me to think about the many ways one can earn money with a Real Estate license now-a-days.

Here is my unofficial list of 16.5 Ways To Earn $$ in the Real Estate World This Year:

1)  List properties

2)  Represent buyers  money, money, money

3)  Auction properties

4)  Work as a referral agent.  Prospect for leads and refer away!

5)  Become an expert witness

6)  Complete Broker's Price Opinions (BPO's)

7)  Work as a Real Estate consultant

8)  Work as a property manager

9)  Specialize in new construction - work for a builder

10)  Obtain a Broker's license and manage an office

11)  Better yet...become a Broker in order to own your own office!

12)  Become a trainer/coach/speaker/instructor/coach

13)  Consider working as a short-sale negotiator for an attorney's office or a bank

14)  Look for staff positions for the corporate offices of one of the big brands.  For instance, Realogy (parent company of Coldwell Banker, ERA, C21 and Sothebys) is in Parsippany, NJ

15)  Specialize as a commercial agent

16)  Manage commercial rentals

and 16.5)  Look for a parallel business to fit hand-in-hand with your Real Estate career.  One suggestion that appears to work quite nicely for agents is to branch out into the energy supply business, helping consumers to save money on their utility bills.

There are lots of opportunities out there for sure, Folks!

Chris ~ Nice post. I got my License activated in January of 2008. Everyone thought I was crazy. (I am, in a funny kinda way) The way I looked at it was, I knew the market was slow and being so, I would be able to learn and absorb in more depth, the things I needed to learn from the start. I didn't jump into the hectic high time and because of that, when the market does get back to where it was in 03-05, I'll be more prepared. i am glad I made the decision when I did, it's already proven to be beneficial, from my point of view. With the way our market is, I am currently focused on being a Buyers Agent, but I won't turn anyone away that needs help, on either side.

Getting results w/ knowledge & know-how!

Nice post, Chris and a great reminder of the # of ways we can apply our knowledge & skills. I got my license in July 2009 and like Jon, everyone thought i was NUTS!  I am a true believer that our success lies in the mirror... A great agent will succeed in any market condition. Cheers to your on-going success!

Chris, even though I'm seeing business pick up this year, I work on my Plan B for extra money and long term security. Do you have a new picture? Oh, and I love your Billy series. LOL

Celebrating 25 Years in Real Estate!

Good morning, Josh.  I wish success to you, as well!

Hi, Jon...Hi, Brenda.  I think the agents who are cutting their teeth over the past several years will be extremely strong for the duration of their careers.  You both seem to fit that mold.

Connie, I did change my picture.  This one was taken in the backyard of one of my waterfront listings along the Delaware River.  (and I love Billy, too!)  We're alike in that!

Thinking outside the box

Chris, As you so clearly point out, there are many variations in this business one can focus on. It is important to make a list when working on problem solving.
