My Favorite Honolulu Neighborhoods: Kamiloiki, in the Hawaii Kai Region of Honolulu
Located at the top of Lunalilo Home Road and behind Koko Crater, Kamiloiki offers amazing views. Most homes were built in the 1980′s and 1990′s, with the average home consisting of three bedrooms, two baths and a two-car garage. The terrain here is hilly. Technically there are two sections to this area, Kamiloiki Estates and Kamiloiki Heights.
Kamiloiki Estates consists of 78 smaller houses roughly 1,400 square feet in size, located at the mauka, or mountain end of Lunalilo Home Road. Most of these homes were built in the late 1970′s and early 1980′s. Since these homes are smaller and do not have ocean views, prices are moderate, comparatively speaking.
Kamiloiki Heights is the area where the Estates area ends and Lunalilo Home Road makes a “U” turn. Homes here, at the base of the mountain, form the head of Mariner’s Valley. Most of the 86 homes here were built in the early to mid 1990′s and range in size from 1,200 to 1,900 square feet. Many homes here have excellent open views of Koko Crater overlooking Mariner’s Valley.
This area used to be farmed for sweet potatoes and Milo trees, hence “milo” in the anme Kamiloiki. The wood from the Milo tree is sometimes used in Hawaiian artwork.
