Is Shrek Green? Advice to Kids on Being Green... Check it Out!

So, I'm this huge movie buff.  In fact, one of my favorite things to do is to sit down on a Friday night with a bag of popcorn and put in the latest and greatest movie.  And by the way, my family has seen a ton!  Last Friday, we watched Shrek 3 with the kids.  Initially, I wasn't going to watch it but decided it would be a good family bonding time!

The movie was good but what was interesting was playing around after the movie in the extras.  They had "Ask Merlin" where you get to ask Merlin a Yes or No question and he answers.  My question was, "Will I be incredibly wealthy?"  I'll just say, I was pleased with the answer!

Another section was titled, "Being Green" to which my husband said that I should see what that's all about since I love the "Green" movement.  Because I'm curious... I checked it out.  Shrek starts out by saying that Kermit (do you remember him?) said it wasn't easy being green.  To which he replies that it's not that hard.  So here's the message that was sent out to the kids in a fun way on the backend of this movie.

Being Green is being Friendly to the Environment - Some Great Kid (Easy) Points about Green!!!

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Reduce - Use Cloth Towels instead of Paper Towels. 27 Million Trees are destroyed/year because we use paper towels.

Reuse - Toys, Games, Clothes

Recycle - Just 1 Aluminum Can Recycled saves enough energy to run TV for 3 hours!!

  • Conserve Water - Only a small % of our Earth is Fresh Water

Shorter Showers - 10 Minute Showers use 100 Gallons of water.  2 Minute Showers use 20 Gallons.

Brushing Teeth - with the water off, one uses 1/2 gallon of water.  With water on, 10 gallons.

  • Use Energy Wisely

Turn off lights, TV when not in use.

Walk more/drive less or Carpool

Lower your thermostat

If everyone drops their thermostat reading by 6 degrees, we would save $500,000 in Barrels of Oil EACH DAY!!!  This is amazing!

  • Tell Everyone How Great It Is to Go Green!

Hi Tammy - the movie gave some great tips and not just to kids! If we can raise them right they can get us out of this mess our generation created with wastefulness! It sounds like you had a great family night!

Thanks for sharing the tips.  While I am big on filling my recycle bin, I don't know that I could handle a 2 minute shower.  It is my winter retreat when my toes are numb.

What a great feature on the DVD, and thanks for sharing.  Also, kids need to learn that they less they consume (from soda cans to toys) the better the earth will be.  It is tough these days to teach kids that less is more.

Hey Deb - I'm just trying to get my family to take 10 minute showers, not 20 minutes and remember to turn off the lights.

Mary - I thought it was cool that it was on the video too.  Less is more!

Tammy,

Recycling is one of my favorites. We have a good program here in Vegas, but unfortunately my neighbors are disappointing because only about one in ten is doing it. The bins are provided for free and people still don't find the time to separate their newspapers, glass and aluminum/tin cans.

Tammy, This is such a great way to begin teaching our children! The best way is to "do" the right things. Life makes it so hard for us to conform in such a stringent way although I love the idea of 1 can, 1 of anything that can make a difference. I've got to watch it. Thanks for pointing this out! Deb
