The battle started with an ambush at the St. Mary's River, and continued for a few days until the Union was defeated by the Confederates on February 20, 1864. Florida was not brought back into the Union until the end of the War. The Union only held the territory east of the St. Johns River in Northeast Florida, according to the details on the website.
