What are the risks of using Pinterest?

Reblogger Debbie Walsh

Here is an interesting post from Roy Kelley about Pinterest.  I am not too familiar with it but have been staying away since I know several people who tried to join and were told they were put on a "waiting list."  What??

What are the risks of using Pinterest?

Many of us are posting images and photographs on Pinterest and some of as real estate professionals are trying to figure out how to use Pinterest to promote our businesses.

However, have we really given consideration to the risks of using Pinterest?  What if we post photographs that belong to others and then access to the photographs is sold by Pinterest to third parties?  Will we be personally liable for damages or will our company be sued?  If we post our own photographs on Pinterest, what rights, if any, do we give up if access to those images is sold by Pinterest?

I just read this article that says that The Boston Business Journal stopped using Pinterest "after realizing it could be sued for images it uploaded to the site".

How You Could Get Sued For Using Pinterest

This article provides a good reminder to be very familar with the user agreements on websites and to consider the risks that are involved.

What do you think about risks faced by Pinterest users?

Be sure to have your camera in hand to capture those special moment when you are out and about in your community or during your travels.

Hi Debra,

I'm also not too fond of Pinterest. I have a lot of photos out there and I didn't give permission for anyone or any site to use them. I know credit of some kind is given to the original author but it's only a name, not a link back to that person. I have enough social media for my business. Anymore, and I'll be out of business.

Very timely post!  I just started with pinterest this week and I absolutely love it.  I am attending an Inmann webinar this week on Pinterest for real estate and once that is completed I will do a post here at AR.

I have created a board with information called everything Pinterest which has a specific article on your exact question of copyright.  I also created a board with the lot that I am trying to sell which Candice Donofrio a very aggressive activerain blogger has listed.  So as a seller I am able to post her MLS information to the public and her blog post from Activerain for all my followers to see my property.

I see it as a positive way to share real estate.  I have a board with fun home ideas, gardening ideas and real estate from around the world.  I can create a board for anything I want so I see it as a powerful tool to share information about houses.  Many of the people I have been talking to thorugh their "pins" have a dream board and they want to buy a specific type of home, they might be getting married and they have what they want on their boards.  I know evetyone is tired of learning new social media all the time but this one.... is FUN.  It is not work.  Cool ideas are pinned then you decide if you want to pin them and then share with others. I have my pins posted on my facebook page and in the new format for FB there is a box for pinterest posts.  I also have my pins tweeted so I have had several people RT my fun posts and now am engaging on Twitter about things from Pinterest.  This all is part of the evolution to be a "real person" sharing the social side and then it gives them an opportunity to link to your business side. One more part of the new world marketing as the Cosmic Shift Happens. It just all takes a balance of the time invested and I KNOW that is a problem...... deciding where to spend the social media minutes is difficult when listing and selling homes is already a full time job.

Debbie, I have not heard of Pinterest before, but those are very legitimate concerns.

It's pretty anoying that people will take the time to sue you over anything these day.. it sounds like putting up your own photos will get you in trouble possibly? I'll be sure to stay away from the site..which I dont think I'm on there anyway

Hi Debbie, I have heard of Pinterest but haven't had time nor much interest in looking into it.  Seems there are new networks popping up every five minutes, I'm feeling a little overloaded and have trouble keeping up with it all.

Good morning Debra.

You can't really control, what people do with all the photos that you post.

BTW, a great profile photo.

Best of luck.

Actually, my thoughts are that something like Pinterest is just one more way that some agents can talk themselves into thinking they are working, when they are actually just goofing off... LOL.  But doing Pinterest... they could also end up getting involved in a lawsuit.  Does not sound like fun to me.  It sounds like what I would call a very risky behaviour.

I hope that those interested in Pinterest were able to attend the Inman webinar, today, that discussed real estate use of Pinterest.
