Crazy Myth: Posting listings to a blog is too hard, time consuming & pointless

Here is an excerpt from my blog on how to post listings on your blog effectively...

Crazy Myth #4: Posting listings on my blog will water down the rest of my content

This myth actually isn’t so crazy. It’s a real concern that many real estate bloggers have, and I don’t recommend that anyone write a post about an individual listing and include it with their regular blog content.

So, here is how you get around that… The solution I’m sharing can be done on any platform, but I’m going to show you how with wordpress.

The best solution for this problem is to create a specialized category just for your listings. Then, you want to tell wordpress (or your platform of choice) not to include that category on the home page. You are essentially just excluding that particular category.

You will want to place this code in your index.php file to tell your home page not to include the category you choose.

Here is the code: <?php query_posts(’cat=-13′); ?>

You will need to change the category number to make it work (where it says: “13″). To find the category number, go to >Manage>Categories, then view the category number you want to exclude. For more detailed instructions on this try this wordpress tutorial.

I'm interested in trying this to see how it works!  I'm looking to better organize and streamline processes as I bring more content online.

Justin, I did just this very thing last week with Molly Tomato's help.  My sellers expect their listings on my website and I aim to give it to them.  My readers (all 9 of them) however, don't want to have to sift through my listings to get to my articles.  Nice work!

I had no idea. Does this mean we should not post listings on our Active Rain blog for localism? I will bookmark this and read again.

Thanks. This is good information and good marketing material for listing presentations, especially if you can show your blog has good reader counts. Always glad to see a new article from Justin.

I knew this was a hot button topic... It's been interesting to see the comments here as well as on my primary blog.

@Emily - You can always just go to wordpress.com to get started with a free blog.  But if you want to get serious about blogging, you'll probably want to host the blog on your own domain name.  The company I work for also has a great product if you're interested.  Go to my blog to get more info:  www.hismove.com/blog

@Dave - When you see people advertising posts on AR it's because they checked both boxes when it came time to post: for consumers & for professionals.  Which really isn't allowed.  It's why Localism was started in the first place.  Keep those listings on Localim, and your fellow AR member will thank you.

@Debra - Thanks for the response post! - http://activerain.com/blogsview/287902/Dear-Justin-Tomato-Coach

@Gita - No... you should definitely keep posting your blogs to localism.  It's quick, easy, free, you get points, and there is great exposure there.  I just don't personally recommend anyone placing advertisements for listings right in the middle of the their other blog content... whether that's on your primary blog, or even AR!

I don't list a lot, so it isn't a huge problem for me, but I don't think that a listing here or there is a problem.  It's when the blog is overrun by them that it could be bad...

My take on it.

Thank yo so much for this info, Justin.  I never really saw a down-side to including posts about our listings with everything else in our blog, but I can see where a specialized category for them would be beneficial.

This is a good solution, Justin. I want to post my listings, but don't want everyone to have to wade through them if they're not interested.

I amde the mistake of posting many of my listings on my blog. It definitely does not read well, but I like being able to promote the listings on Localism.com.  Does this apply to this particular blog or just private website blogs (which I have as well). Thanks for the info.

Thanks. I am just learning on wordpress. www.overlandparkrealestate.wordpress.com Is my site for, you guessed it, Overland Park Real Estate in Johnson county Kansas. Thank you for the great blogs. So I guess after reading this I will stop posting listings on my blog and instead just post them on my websites, such as www.kenjansenrealestate.com . If I include the script you mentioned above in the blog, then am I correct that it will not drain my page ranking but I could still have that page show up in a google search with the right keywords, such as the address?

Thanks!
