To Whidbey Island Washington on the Ferry
To Whidbey Island Washington on the Ferry
The long low horn over the water. The clanging of the bell. The caw caw of the sea gulls as they fly over head.
These are all familiar for those of us in Washington State who use the ferry’s to get to our amazing islands.
First check the schedule. Then pay the ticket and park in the indicated line. Pull out a good book, stroll the waterfront, or maybe go get a latte while you wait.
Soon the big boat is pulling in. Always impressive. The docking is always smooth.
First the people and bicycles get off. Then all the motorcycles come pouring out. Then the long line of cars and trucks.
You are on the ferry. Up you go, to the passenger deck. The ferry is pulling out. So smooth you don’t feel the motion, you just see the pilings starting to slide to the back.
Ahhhhh! The beautiful, beautiful Sound!
Life is good. The water is beautiful. The sea gulls chase the ferry a quarter of the way across.
One of life’s rich pleasures.

I remember the ferries so well. I would go to Vashon Island every weekend to see a friend that lived there and had to ride that to and from the island. Really enjoyed the ride every time.
