Pantries can be a Great Selling FeatureDid you ever think that a lowly closet could be a great selling feature in your Glenview home? Well, it's true.  Most people realize the value of closet space these days, and the buyers looking at your home are probably no exception.

You may think no one will notice your closets, but don't kid yourself. And since the only way to get a look at the real dimensions is to open the door, most buyers do. They may try to do it on the sly, some ask the showing agent first, while others just barge right in. So be prepared, as most serious homebuyers will check behind those closet doors.

First and foremost, as in all the other parts of your home, DECLUTTER! If your closet is overflowing with clothes, lucky you! However, buyers aren't really interested in how many blue sweaters you have or your stash of sandals.

So it's time to get your closet space organized, and here are some effective tricks:
    1. If you have too many clothes for the available space, try moving your out-of-season clothes to a storage unit.
    2. Once you have the amount of clothing down to a workable level, organize it by color.
    3. If blocks of color don't work for your closet, consider organizing by "like items". For example: all the slacks together, all the t-shirts together, all the jeans together, all the blazers together. I'm sure you're getting the picture here. Make up your own categories and go for it!
    4. Stash all your small stuff (scarves, belts, purses, etc.) in totes or even shoe boxes, and set it on the closet floor if there's space available without going back to that cluttered look. If not, out it goes to the storage unit.
    5. Get a rack for your shoes. You'll like it too, because you'll be able to find the perfect shoe (and its mate) every time and quickly, too.

If you can afford it, custom built-ins in a closet are a boon to the sale of most homes. Even less expensive shelves and racks can make any closet more attractive to buyers. They'll be able to envision their own organized stuff on the shelves, and who doesn't want to have order in their personal spaces these days?

For the Glenview or Wilmette house with a pantry, as before, declutter and organize. If there are shelves of canned goods in the pantry, set them in neat rows of like items--peas, corn, tomatoes, etc. For small packets of gravy, rice or soups, find some kind of tote or box to store them together. For spices, nothing is better than a rack that allows you to see what you have. And nothing looks more organized and appetizing than dry pasta in tall glass jars!
