Is Your Buyer Looking For A Norwegian Elkhound?

Many years ago while on business travel in Western Maryland, I called my husband and said "Remember that dog I said we would never get?  I am bringing her home!"  The poor, beautiful dog was standing in the pouring down rain just outside of a post office in a small town in West Virginia just over the boarder. I asked around and no one knew anything about this dog.   I left my information at the post office and with the local police station and drove home with her.  A trip to the vet told us that she was a Norwegian Elkhound, malnourished and covered in ticks.  She quickly became part of our family. She was a wonderful, well-behaved dog, about 6 years old.

Sadly, shortly after we had her, while on a walk with my then young son's, she darted into the street after a squirrel.  She was hit by a car and killed.   (This is why I don't recommend extender leashes!)  Our family was devastated.  This dog we had no intention of getting had worked her way into our hearts.

On the advice of many friends, we decided to get another dog.  I got the addresses of the local shelters and we were on our way.  I was checking out all the dogs, they were all so cute. My husband on the other hand walked in, quickly walked through and walked out.  I didn't understand it.   After this was repeated at 2 more shelters, I finally asked "What is going on?  Do you not want another dog?  I thought you were on board."

"I am on board" he said.  "They just don't have any Elkhounds."

I was flabbergasted.  I had no idea that he only was looking for another Elkhound. I hadn't asked the question.

What does this have to do with Real Estate?

Have you asked the right questions?

Are you heading to lots of "Shelter's" looking for the right fit for your clients only to have them walk in and walk right out?

How many houses should we see before buying

I ask you to STOP!  Take a breath.  Go back to the basics. Ask the questions and make sure everyone is on the same page.  You will do yourself and your clients a great service. If you don't, you may spend every weekend with your new friends who may never be your CLIENTS!  If you don't, your new friends will probably make friends with another agent who will ask the right questions and miraculously find the RIGHT home after just a couple properties.

It was amazing how quickly we found the right dog for our family by going to the Norwegian Elkhound Club of Potomac Valley, a Norwegian Elkhound Rescue in Maryland.  We asked the questions, did the research and made the decision.  We worked through the adoption process and brought our puppy HOME!

I want to SELL your home, not LIST it!

I think that a comprehensive initial interview and needs consultation is essential to understanding the clients' lifestyle and circumstances.  Not only does it give us a better basis on which to help them, but it also firms up in their mind what they should be looking for.
