Culinary Institute of America

The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, affectionately know as the CIA, recently needed to expand their facilities to accommodate their growing student enrollment.

Six buildings were constructed to house over 420 students.  The institution used the opportunity to be more environmentally conscious. To achieve this energy efficient windows and high performance insulated roofs were installed. To provide heat for the facility geothermal heat pumps were also installed.  This effort to go green did draw attention.  It is the Governor of New York, Elliot Spitzer's goal to cut electric consumption by 15 percent by 2015; so whenever an organization undertakes such an initiative it does not go unnoticed because this is helping the governor realise his dream.

For their effort this week the Culinary received greenbacks in the amount of $337,571 from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.  The entire press release can be found here

Jennifer,
I applaud the CIA for their decision to make energy efficient decisions.  We all need to conserve when and where we can.

The CIA (Boy, does that sound impressive) should be commented for taking those steps and deserves the "green" from the state.

Jennifer, It is wonderful that some large places are taking the initiative to hopefully make other people think about going green themselves.  I have been to the one in NYC to get a "samples" dinner by the new chefs, it's fabulous!
