Paying Per Month To Be In Top 3 Spots On Google, Yahoo, MSN

Has anyone heard of paying a monthly fee to be guaranteed in one of the top 3 sponsoring spots on Google, Yahoo and MSN?  We were contacted by a company that says they are authorized by these web search engines to sell us these positions EVERY time.  There is no cost per click, it is a flat rate and you basically "own" the 8 key words associated with it.  For more keywords, the cost nearly doubles and for what we were looking at, the cost is close to $1700/month to be guaranteed in one of the top 3 sponsored spaces.  What do you think?  Has anyone every used this?  I asked the sales rep for some people that were currently using their system so I could hear some good testimonials first hand and find out of it was worth the high cost, but she informed me that their company has a strict privacy policy and she couldn't give me one person.  After I asked her to see if she could get permission from at least 1 happy client, she told me no and went on to tell me that my current pay per click campaign has some serious flaws and that it would be "If nothing else, it would be an unwise business decision to forget the most effective means of advertising your business on the Internet simply due to our company's privacy policy."

I don't respond well to this type of sales etiquette so I will no be looking any further into signing on with her.  She explained it is a short term commitment and I can cancel if it is not working out.  (after paying close to $1700/month for 3 MONTHS)  I don't feel like I am willing to throw away over $5K to find out if she is right or just feeding me some sales lines.  I think it's important to be able to talk to someone using the system first hand that is happy with it.  They can tell you the pros and cons.

Their website is www.netsolutions.com

It doesn't sound right to me. How can you "own" keywords. You can thru optimization get your site up there. There are some good blogs on rain that talk about techniques in the seo section.

Anyone unwilling to provide you with either a name or a phone number of a testimonial is untrustworthy.  (Thats why all of mine are on my website in plain view of the world.)  And with your willingness to at least think about investing that much into this venture, you would think they would be willing to do whatever is required to get you to sign that deal...I think you were getting scammed as I work with many agents that have been down this road with one company or another.  Doing your homework like this is what keeps smart agents in business...

It's a scam. They can't guarantee anything. All the search engines sell sponsoring spots, those are the links that are usually highlighted at the top of the search list. How can your sight be guaranteed on of the spots if the search engines sell to multiple people? Check out this link from Google about this.

I get those calls every couple of months.  They are nice and sweet on the phone until you tell them NO.  Then the whole tone changes.

Thanks for the replies!  That is exactly what I thought about it....scam!  Especially when the sales rep got snotty and rude when I didn't sign right up.  She acted like it's not that much for what she can give me and like we were wasting her time.  She contacted my husband first and he really wanted to just do it, but then I responded to the email she sent him with the info and asked her for some people I could call that are using it and her whole tone changed.  She went on to call him and talk to him about it and then emailed to tell us what an unwise business decision it would be.  Sure, whatever you say.  If you can't give out info because of your privacy policy (which she informed us she is not the owner and she cannot change their policy), give us a free month and let us see how we like it.  Give us a free week, give us a free day.  If your product is that great and there is nothing else you can do, give us a trial and maybe I will think about it...
