Ok, so owning a home means paying the monthly bills such as utilities, mortgage and so forth.  It also includes cleaning and maintaining the home.  So how well do you know how to care for your home.  What can help or hurt your home?  Tips to keep your home running more efficiently.  Here are some tips and tricks to help you avoid common mistakes made every day.

1. PROPANE TANKS - Do you have a gas grill?  If so, where should you store an extra propane tank in the winter (or for that matter any time).

OUTSIDE AND COVERED!  Many people want to store them in the garage or basement of the house.  Propane is highly combustable and can easily lead to a house fire.  Recently, we found one stored by the water heater.

2.  IN THE WINTER AND COLD MONTHS, WHAT SHOULD YOU CHANGE MONTHLY?  FURNACE FILTER, CHIMNEY FILTER, RADIATOR VALVES OR THERMOSTAT BATTERY?

FURNACE FILTER!  Dirty, clogged filters cause the fan to work harder thus making you use more energy as well as keeping the house from staying as warm.

3.  Where does BLACK MOLD LIKE TO LURK THE BEST?  Kitchen counter, closets, light fixtures or in the oven?

CLOSETS!  Mold can grow anywhere however it does love the darkness of a closet!  This is a prime place to check.  Mold can lead to asthma, infections and other health problems - that an be blammed on other things when mold is the culprit.  So check out these closets with a flash light and ALWAYS GET RID OF MOLD BY A PROFESSIONAL.

4.  DURING THE WINTER WHICH WAY SHOULD YOUR CEILING FAN RUN.  Clockwise or Counterclockwise?

CLOCKWISE!  Warm air rises so you want to push the warm air from the ceiling back down using all the warm air possible therefore saving on your energy bills.

5.  BABY POWDER KEEPS RACCOONS AWAY FROM GARBAGE CANS?       True or False?

True!  Raccoons don't like the feeling of dust on their paws.  They are very picky little pests.  So the baby powder feels like dust and helps keep them away!  Cool idea and smells nice too!  And not to mention...it is SAFE!

6.  BEFORE CALLING A PLUMBER AND RUNNING UP A LARGE BILL WHEN YOUR BATHTUB DRAIN IS CLOGGED YOU SHOULD?    Use a plunger, a solution of vinegar and baking soda, liquid glog remover like Draino or a wire hanger?

Wire Hanger!   You can bend it straight and use some plyers to make a small hook and attempt to remove the clog which is usually scum from soap as well as hair!  Warm water also assists nicely.  I even suggest having small needle nosed plyers to help pull out the hair once at the top of the drain.
