Now That's A Lot Of Bull

By

Now That's A Lot Of Bull. Hopefully I've got your attention, and now let's direct it to the High Wire Ranch in Hotchkiss, Colorado. It's so neat to just drive by this ranch and see all the elk and bison they raise. In the fall the elk are sporting their large racks (antlers) and it's really something to see.

Buffalo At High Wire Ranch, ColoradoOn this particular day the elk were playing it cool away from the road. But the buffalo are also really something to see. Dave and Sue Whittlesey own High Wire Ranch and have been raising buffalo since 1981 and elk since 1987. All of the animals are grass fed and no hormones or antibiotics are used...so the meat is all natural. And pretty tasty, too.  The Whittleseys have been featured in Sunset Magazine and Eating Well Magazine. The meat is shipped all over the country. For more information, visit the High Wire Ranch website at www.highwireranch.com. There you can find out more about the ranch, recipes and pricing.

Hi Debbie,

It is nice to know you can find a place like this that feed the animals naturally without hormones. I bet the meat is good! I adore American history so when I see bison, it reminds me of how the west was won and how our country became the great place it is today.

I have eaten both at one time or another in the past.  But those prices are not in my budget.  Too many kids.  I hear buffalo are expensive to raise because normall fences do not hold them.

Gene normal fences seem to hold buffalo on the outskirts of the @ and Rio Rancho.  I guess if they really wanted out not much would or could stop them.  Beautiful beast Deb and great shots!

I love the shot with the mountains in the background. It says a lot about what people love about Colorado.

Hi, Kristin...imagine what it use to be like then the great buffalo roamed the plains in large herds.

Hi, Gene...you do pay more for the meat, but it's all natural and good for you. You pay more for anything that is all natural and good for you. Plain and simple....it's just getting expensive to eat well.

Hi, John. It seems that normal fences do hold the buffalo and elk. They are really high so the elk won't jump them. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi, Steve...I love watching the elk and buffalo. Often times I've stopped to take pictures. Now the fall is when the elk look really cool with their large racks.

Hi, Joetta...this area is known for it's organic produce and there are orchards everywhere. We even have one winery that makes organic wine. I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for the information Deb!  I have driven by the ranch on numerous occasions, but never have checked out their website.  We have plenty of elk in our freezer, but I would love to have some buffalo!

Debbie, I remember my uncle and cousins shooting buffalo and elk in Montana years ago.  They had them dressed there, and brought home what I thought was a lot of meat.  We would have one feast and the rest fed the family for who know how long.  But, it was always an event.  And, of course, no hormones or antibiotics there either!

Hi Debbie, I had never thought about Colorado in that way, the elk, bison, and buffalo raising way, I mean.  Thanks for sharing, I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates these Colorado facts and that's no bull! :-)

Hi, Cindy. Enjoy that elk in the freezer. Are you going on tour today. I'm planning to, but I also have a closing later this morning, and the snow really makes things move slower.

Hi, Ann...that really is a lot of meat on the hoof. The ranch also uses the hide and sells those. It's great they use as much of the animal as they can.

Hi, Ron....did you get a lot of snow? We only got 3 inches. So there won't be a snow day for me.

Hi, Silvia. Imagine what the plains use to be like when the great buffalo roamed wild. Now that would have been something to see.

And soon it will be spring and I bet another trip to the ranch will reveal some new additions. The Sandia Pueblo in New Mexico does have raise them and they are just amazing to see in real life and not on a nickel!

I made some delicious elk chili last night using the 2-Alarm ingredients off the internet.  Good stuff!

Hi, Debra, and thanks for stopping by. I bet you don't see too many buffalo in New York.

Ya know, Cindy, I'm free for dinner most nights, and you know my culinary skills leave a bit to be desired. I saw you working late at the office. I had to go to the school for a meeting for parents with kids in tennis.
