I had the pleasure of having my mom and dad drive down to Georgia from NY for the Thanksgiving week break. Cherokee County schools are off the entire week, so my parents decided to come early so they could visit with my kids while they were home! What a break for me! (My mom even offered to babysit if I had any staging jobs to line up while they were here! Unfortunately, I didn't have to take her up on the offer...)
Anyway, since the weather was so beautiful that week, mid 70's and mostly sunny, we decided to plan a day trip to Rock City at Look Out Mountain. From the pinnacle, you can see 7 states! It's about an hour and 20 minute ride from Woodstock, straight up 75N over the border into Chattanooga, TN onto 24W. We packed sandwiches and drinks for lunch, charged the camera and headed out around 10AM.
What started out as a dismal cloudy morning (figures because it was crystal clear blue skies the days prior!) eventually burned off, somewhat. The revelation was the firey bright trees in all their glory appearing in the rays of the sunlight that burned through the clouds. I've been told that this was one of the best years for foliage in Georgia in a long time. I'm just grateful I got be witness to it. The colors we saw are what I'm used to seeing in New England in early October. The colors NEVER get THAT bright in NYC...it seems that everything gets washed out by a layer of grey. I noticed that about 5 years ago as I arrived in Newark airport after a 3-day trip to visit my grandmother in Port St Lucie, FL. Maybe it was spending 3 days with sun, color and greenery that heightened my awareness to the grey-ness that seems to cover Metro NY...I don't know...I just remember realizing it and never forgetting it!
My mom exclaimed that this was the best fall she'd had in years, having spent a week in Maine in October during it's peek foliage week, the peak time in NY at the end of October (which doesn't even compare!) and being here during the peak week in GA! I was glad she got to experience it.
Here's some pictures from our visit to Rock City. Well worth the trip if you've never been. They host an Enchanted Garden of Lights trail in the evenings now for the holidays...the whole rock path is decorated with lights...it must be beautiful! They offer packages that include Ruby Falls, the Tennessee Aquarium and the Incline Railroad. One of these days we'll do them all.
Here is my mom and dad with my children, Ethan and Kate, at the Mushroom Rock located within the Rock City trail.
Here is Kate sitting on the rock wall that runs through much of the trail. It's done beautifully...my mother was in awe of it all. The trail is fairly easy for anyone to walk it as nothing is too step.
OK, "Don't look down!" There is a Swing bridge, as you see here but also a solid Rock bridge for those of us that are afraid of crossing on THAT thing! I'm standing across from them securely on the rock bridge. Kids!
If you look carefully, almost at the direct center of the edge of the mountain, it looks like a profile of a FACE! It's so cool!
I didn't want to crop it because the veiw was so nice...just a bit cloudy still. The backgound looks so fake!
Thanks for stopping by!
