I lost a lead because I didn't check my facebook page!

I don't use Facebook that often...and, well maybe I should.

facebookJust like all of you, it's overwhelming to keep up w all the blogging and the social media and other marketing I do and take care of running my business (doing the appointments, estimates and tons of day to day stuff).

Yes, I do have an assistant (who is amazing) and now she is over capacity too...and I'm doing my best to delegate and prioritize.

I've prioritized blogging over social media as it has gotten me way more business and appears to be a much better use of my time.  And, I think this is a wise decision.

While I do post many updates vis hootsuite (this saves me tons of time), I don't go into Facebook that often nor interact/comment on others' posts as often as I should.  Sometimes I go in every week, sometimes every 2 weeks.  Certainly not everyday.

facebookWell I felt sick to my stomach when saw a facebook email from 10 days prior w/ a lead in it!  It was a real estate agent I met 3 years ago, and she uses Facebook all the time (and apparently gets a lot of business from it).  Apparently, the email either was not forwarded to me or went into spam (and that seems to be the case for all of Facebook emails)...and I get way too many email and I can't keep up w/ them and sometimes my head just wants to explode from all these emails and all the social media.  It's overwhelming to keep up.

Now, I lost this job (she already found someone), but I did repair the relationship w/ the agent, and now she does know that we do this work, and I explained to her that I don't check FB, do I do respond to regular emails and phone messages very promptly, and it was good catching up with her.

Nonetheless, there have been other times where I've missed FB emails and didn't seem them until way after the fact.  I'm not sure why people send emails on FB (rather than on regular email), but the fact of the matter is that many people do this, so I need to adapt.

I was just curious as to how "you keep up" and any advice that you can provide on this, so it doesn't happen to me again.

Debbie, like you, I don't check FB daily. I don't use it as much as I should for business. But I see friends who use this exclusively for all kinds of communication.

Debbie, let me give you a piece of advice regarding Facebook.  Make sure you physically go into your messages on Facebook and check to see if there are new ones.  Many times Facebook will neither send you an email nor notify you once you're actually in Facebook that you have a new message.  And sometimes, the message won't appear in your messages until days after it was sent.  This has happened to me before, and it just happened the other day to someone I know.  Just an FYI.

Hi Debbie, I too don't check facebook daily because I just can't keep up with it all and I don't use it for business too much but then again, how long does it take to check, right??

Hi Debbie. Wow what a wake up call for all of us. I probably spend more time on FB than any SM outlet. But I will make sure to check my messages more frequently. Thanks for the reminder

I have experienced what you describe and don't have a better solution than checking the fb page often. I've lost rental leads because they showed up only as a comment on a posting.

Debbie~~ The facebook crowd expects you to be there along with them. they write often and about everything. My business page and friend page is all mixed up and they contact me at both locations to discuss things, when they think they are actually emailing me. It is really quite interesting how confusing all of this is. I am wondering now with the new biz page facebook timeline how much more involved it will be to keep up..  So sorry about you missing out!

Tammie - It sounds like I may need to start doing this - or at least every other day. Kimm - Yes, I think you're right. I've learned my lesson. Joanna - I know. Maybe I just need to add in during my morning routine w/ AR/commenting. Kimberly - Yes, it was a huge wake up call. I don't want this to happen ever again. Mark - Oh god pt, I need to check the comments, too...and on both personal and fan page. Oy vey. Janis - I know...I see. I don't think they realize and the onus is on me. Oh no re: the timeline. This stuff is getting so overwhelming.

Debbie~ I'm in the same boat.  I don't go to FB very often, but I know people who do (especially our kids).  I think the trick is that we have to make time EVERY day, even if it's just 15 minutes, to go in, check for messages and comment on a few posts (just like we do here).

Donna - Yes, I'm starting to feel that's what I need to do.  Maybe less time commenting here to make up for it.

Hi Debbie--we all need 10 arms and 10 legs to keep up with all the social media.  I do go in and check my FB page about every other day because I know some people prefer that form of contact over phone or regular email.  Another thing I have done is spend a ton of time getting off so many email lists to keep my Inbox from overflowing.  Then I have know what is in there is important and it gives me those few extra minutes to check FB more often.

It is important to keep a check on the networking sites so we dont end up losing leeds. What can be done is, you can go on the Settings option on your FB page, and activate notifications of messages and wall posts  to be received on your mail . If you get your mails on phone, then you will instantly receive the message and you can log in and respond to it. This saves the time of always logging in and keeping a tab of your page.

If you have an iPhone or a Droid, you can use the Facebook app and that way just check it at noon and at the end of business.  You don't need to spend time reading through the posts....just look to see if you have any messages.  I've had several clients and friends contact me that way instead of using my regular email address.  Hope this helps!

Janet - Yes, we do.  I'm getting better about checking it now.  But, it's still so hard.  I have so much to do.

Barbara Jo - I'm so glad it's working for you.  Yes, the interaction (and few leads I do get) are from people I know.  it makes sense.

Coldwell Banker - Yes, I think I was getting way too many notifications of meaningless stuff that was constantly interupting.   still need to figure out which is better - me proactively logging in (which I lean towards since it's less disruptive) or getting interupted and bombarded on email (or phone).

Dan - I may give that a try when I get my new iPhone. I still need to think it through, and your idea may be a good way.  Thx.
