"You Can't Fix Stupid"

Real Estate Agent with Associate Broker at Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Georgia Properties 256152

I was showing homes to a client last week. He seemed to be unusually well prepared for every home he saw. It was puzzling me how he came up with so much detailed information so quickly. He seemed to have all the information I could provide before I could even provide it. He even asked me once what MLS area we were in ... why would he care? However, I was hesitant to ask how he was getting his information.

As the day went on and we became more comfortable with each other, he finally told me.

As he put it, he was working with an agent who wasn't very good. The agent actually suggested that they all take the client's car and ride together. Then he showed them homes they didn't want because of his own personal gain, such as his listing or a listing that paid one percent more commission.

Then came the really amazing part. Since the agent obviously did not have a search engine on his website, if he had a website, and didn't want to bother to work for his pay, he gave the client his name and password to access the MLS directly! HE GAVE THE CLIENT ACCESS TO THE MLS DIRECTLY!!!

But since the agent was lazy and incompetant, the result was that the client was doing searches, and calling me to show him the homes. I guess the lazy agent forgot to give him his E-key or the client could have been acting completely as his own agent without a license.

It never ceases to amaze me how stupid some people in our industry can be. Giving away access to MLS is not only unfair to everyone who pays for that privilege, it's like giving a child an M-16 with no instructions to play games in the neighborhood!

I'm now in the process of contacting MLS to let them know we have an idiot amongst us. There should be some way to get rid of people in this business when they are just stupid, because you can't fix stupid!

Not only is it stupid to do, he also lost control of his client.  No longer does he get the chance to know what the client is interested in so he can concentrate his fire, but the client also felt neglected and left to fend for himself.  Any favour he hoped to curry by giving him access fell on muted ears.  Not only should you report him, his broker should slap him upside his head!

Sorry, thought I was logged in.

Yep, it happens all the time in my area. We even just put our pictures on our ecards & people are still doing wierd stuff. Our MLS flags & shuts down if you are on the MLS from 2 different locations - so your client is searching as you in the MLS. I was in my office & one computer wouldn't work to print what I wanted & signed into another & soon the MLS picked it up & shut both computer links down.

As everyone has suggested, "stupid" is the tip of the iceberg.  Illegal and unethical are also included.

With our MLS, I don't think that would work.  I've had times this past winter, if I log on for 3-4 sites within a day or so, I get "alerted" and need to substantiate my info.  So, if I log on from a friend's house, from someone's office, from my office, and from home, the MLS clearly suspects trouble.  When it happenned to me, I thought it was foolish, but with jokers like your agent running around, apparently, there is a need.

Interesting to note, at least the buyer was smart enough to realize the original agent wasn't quite the caliber they are looking to work with.

I hope you write another post when the issue (ie the agent) is taken care of.

Great post - this looser went way beyond stupid, past illegal, and right on to possibly endangering the people whose properties are for sale.

I think it says something for the low requirement to be an agent. And where is his broker? And it should definitely be against MLS policy to let clients get into their account. This is not lazy, this is an agent who gives all of us a bad name.

Darn, I was hoping I could do this, was hoping to give clients my Supra key and MLS access and than drop by my home when ready to write up a deal.

This would make my job tougher not being able to do this.

Oh well.

Congratulations on making the top 10 blogs of the year. After reading about this obsurdity I see why it struck a comment reaction with other rainers. As a hard working and active agent it's great that you at least got to take advantage of another lazy agent's lax attitude and effort. I'm amazed! I wish you more great blogging in 2013!

Wow. Just wow. Not only lazy but unethical and, at least in our MLS, most certainly a cause for license revocation.

Hope you got a great sale from working with the Buyer in this case. And congrats on making the Top 10!

I don't think you can do it with our CLAW mls.

I use two computers and every time when i switch between them, I need to get a special code via text or email  to access.

I agree: stupid and super lazy.

Just like Inna  I am in Massachusetts and a member of MLSPIN and when I change computers and IP addresses I receive a notice and sometimes must change my mls code when this happens.
