Get The Soot Out

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker

chimWe all love to sit by the fire on cold evenings. It not only brings warmth and a bit of magic into the home but a few dangers as well. When was the last time you cleaned out your chimney? Soot deposits can catch fire and blow back out of it if the soot scale is thick enough.

You can buy a sweep brush at your local hardware store for around twenty dollars. It comes with attachable handles to reach the top and mine works well (about 20 minutes from start to cleaned up).

There are also "clean-out logs that you burn to supposedly do the job but I have never used them. Here is a useful link http://www.csia.org/

Stay safe and warm this holiday season.

Dont own a fireplace? We have a few homes with them at http://perryangel.georgiamls.com/

Keith,

Great post. This is a very informative post Keith and could very well save lives. Nice work and thanks for keeping us from possibly burning down our homes by accident.

Hi Keith,
I was hoping you were going to tell me that those clean out logs were just the ticket for the job.  I have one but not sure about it.  Who can tell me more?

Keith:  I've used the clean out logs and they seem to work just fine.  Still, I wouldn't rely just on the logs though and I think the ones I've purchased in the past recommend that you still have your chimney checked at cleaned out by a professional.  I have a wood burning fireplace and a wood burning stove and so far the clean out logs seem to do fine but keep in mind how much you use your fireplace may make a big difference.  I do not use mine that often.

Nice post Keith, the logs do well for cleaning if you have a clay liner....not a well with the metal chimney liners they do burn hot to burn away creasote build up.  Nice lead in to listings too....Keith.

We don't have a lot of fireplaces here in Florida.  I would really like one for the "atmosphere."  Maybe in my next home...

Hi Mike, thanks for stopping by.

Donna, I agree the more you use them the dirtier they become.

Thanks Gary, I know that mine is metal so its the brush for me.

Candy, I hope so thank you.

Melissa, check out Gary's comment. :)

Hey Keith...I think the wife should use her good hand and get busy with the brush....I am partner in a Duct Cleaning business..I do know the guys get very dirty doing this stuff...Cough...Cough###

Chimney fires account for many of the total home losses every year. Most people don't realize their home is getting a serious roof burn before its way to late...having a pro check out the stack every year is cheap compared to losing your home, or your life..........Good Post

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

Eventually, mark my words, wood-burning fireplaces will be banned across the country. They are pollutants. I remember the days of being able to burn trash in the trash barrel in the back yard, which nobody can imagine doing today. Sacramento is limiting fireplace fires this winter, and some days, depending on air quality, people can't light a fire at all -- unless it's the only source of heat in the house or it's a gas fireplace.
