So there I was, driving in my car with my 9-year-old daughter in the back seat when I was asked if I wanted to hear the Bazooka Joe cartoon.

Now I know I bought her the gum, but it just had not hit me what I had done at the time. Call it the upcoming holidays and the nostalgia that accompanies the season, but I was overcome with memories. (Actually, it is probably more like an aging thing.)

"Yes! I want to hear the cartoon."

So she read it to me, and I was appalled -- Bazooka Joe is now talking about Instant Messaging. When did Bazooka Joe ever Instant Message??

Now, for those of you who may think I have gone off the edge, you are obviously not old enough to feel kindly towards old Bazooka Joe and his gang. But for me, it was enough to do some Bazooka Joe research, and I am aghast to say that he and I are contemporaries. UGH! What a claim to fame.

Oh yeah. And what happened to the full-color cartoons???

For those who are as neurotic as me, here are a few Bazooka Joe and his gang trivia questions -- and you can find the answers on my home page at  www.wevemovedgifts.com underneath the Active Rain logo.

1. Bazooka Joe was noted for wearing a baseball cap and an ____  ______.  (Asking these questions is sort of like asking who is on the Lincoln penny.)

2. This friend always wore a red turtleneck up over his mouth.

3.  You always had to read these underneath the cartoon.

4.  In 2004, Bazooka Joe celebrated his  ______ anniversary.  (Ooops. You might actually have to look this one up!)

(And if you are silly enough to look up the answer to number 4, please take a few moments to look at my closing gifts on the site!)

In 1967 I ordered a booklet by Charles Atlas by taping a nickel to a piece of paper and putting 5 Bazooka Joe comics in the envelope with it. A nickel .... that was to cover postage. I remember thinking, "A nickel, no problem, but why do I have to send my Bazooka Joe comics???" The booklet? You Don't Have To Be A 98 Pound Weakling. It changed my life, no joke. Bazooka Joe and Charles Atlas lead me to Jack Lalanne and Joe Wieder.
