In my favorite book, The Holy Bible, there are many examples of GOOD triumphing over EVIL. It appears that God anticipated our human tendency to be skeptical and in need of irrefutable evidence in order to fully trust Him. I imagine Him...as He was inspiring men to write The Bible and thinking to Himself... "I know I've already given them all the proof they need, but I think I'll add just one more story to seal the deal. I love them so much...I can't allow their own fear to cause them to fail. This one will teach them to trust ME." I believe that is when He added the story about David and Goliath.
(In my own words...I present to you the story of David and Goliath. 1 Samuel 17)
A really, long time ago, there was a war going on between the Israelites (led by Saul) and the Philistines. The Israelites were camped out on a hill, and the Philistines were across the valley on the other hill. I'm not sure who was the captain of the Philistines, but I do know who was the scariest dude on their side. Goliath was a monster...9ft tall and 400 pounds of pure muscle...a champion warrior who wore a bronze helmet and 125 lbs of bronze armor on his chest.
For forty days...every morning and every evening...Goliath came out into the open and shouted out, "Hey...you wimps! Why won't anyone come down here and fight me like a man? What's wrong? Stop hiding behind your mama's skirt...come fight me one on one! And...I'll sweeten the pot. IF any man can kill me, my buddies will become your slaves. But, if I kill the man who fights me...you guys will have to surrender to us." Saul's men shook in their boots when Goliath spoke...not one man went forward.
Early one morning...a little shepherd boy, named David, brought food to his brothers who were soldiers in Saul's army. As he arrived, Saul's army was lining up (as they did everyday) far away from the threat of Goliath and his buddies. Then, Goliath stepped out...and all of the men ran away in fear. David saw this and asked, "HEY...what the heck is going on? Why are the Israelite soldiers running away like dogs with their tails between their legs? Are you guys gonna let this big brut talk junk about God's people like that without doing anything?" No one answered. Then David said, "Okay...I guess I'll have to go take the big dude out. See ya later!"
Realizing that David was serious, Saul said, "David...are you outta your mind? You are just a kid. You can't fight a professional soldier. Come to your senses, David." David replied, "I might be young, but I am not a wimp. This guy is talking crap about God's army. I can't let him get away with that. Just like I killed the bear and the lion that attacked my little sheep, I'll take this big-mouth bully down. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine. "
We all know the end of the story. David walked out onto the battlefield and stood face-to-face with the giant. Goliath laughed hysterically and asked David why the Israelite army had sent a little boy to do a man's job. Staring into his big, ugly face...David reached into his animal skin pouch and pulled out a perfectly round stone. Without flinching, he loaded his sling shot and fired...nailing Goliath in the center of his forehead. The giant fell...and he fell hard. With one fell swoop...the battle was over. The giant was dead.
What are your giants? What represents Goliath in your life? Is it your finances...your debt? Is it the real estate business...wondering how you will continue to make it in a slow market? Or perhaps, it is more personal...a failing marriage or a child who seems lost. Is it your health...are you facing a life-threatening illness? Is your life out of control? Are you trapped in a cycle of working just to make enough money to pay the bills...but never getting ahead?
Whatever it is...YOUR GIANT is no bigger and no more terrifying than David's giant, Goliath. More importantly, you have the same GOD on your side that David had on his side when he faced Goliath. Just as God held David's hand steady and guided that rock to Goliath's forehead...God will hold you steady. He will give you the strength to face YOUR GIANTS...and through Him...THEY WILL FALL!
