With rising costs of new houses in Canada many home owners are taking advantage of the current low interest rates and choosing to leverage the equity in their homes to do renovations that will increase their living space or update the look and feel of their homes. One of the most common upgrades is bathrooms – either modernizing a current one or adding an additional bathroom to the house.
We spoke with Insight Developments – Calgary Bathroom Renovation Experts – and asked them for a few tips for home owners that are getting refinancing to do a renovation that includes a bathroom and they shared some great advise with us.
1. Put together a budget of what you can afford for all your renovations and get your financing in place before starting so you can work with your Contractor and put together a plan to maximize your budget and timelines.
2. Think about what the needs of the space are – how many people will be using it, what is size of the physical space, accessibility, and functionality.
3. Be open to creative ideas to increase your space and usability, If you have back to back bathrooms think about a glass walk in shower that has doors on either side connecting the 2 bathrooms and creating an amazing open space.
4. If you are going to have an open shower with tiles think about an overhead shower or rain shower to reduce splashing and water spray to protect your walls and floors.
5. Go Green – by adding low flow toilets and fixtures you can feel better about helping the planet and reduce your utility bills.
6. Before deciding on a bathtub try them out, climb in several tubs at your local home renovation or hardware store and sit down. A tub should feel comfortable so you can relax and enjoy the experience of bathing. If you only have space for a small tub then look at putting in deeper tub which takes up less area space but holds more water.
7. Remember this is an investment that can add to the resale value of your home down the road. By choosing things like ceramic or marble tiles for the floor and shower you can create a beautiful space that will last for years and years under the impact of moisture, steam, and everyday use.
