Carlsbad Arts – Mosaic Glass Surf Board Exhibit Featuring Cherrie LaPorte

Opening Night was February 29, 2012

February 29, 2012 was a special day, the Opening Night Reception for a wonderful mosaic glass surfboard collection by the well-known glass artist and owner of the Glass Ranch in Escondido, CHERRIE LA PORTE at CATCH Restaurant in Carlsbad Village.

The exhibit is up from the 29th until March 6 and the surfboards are available for purchase (read and see more about Cherrie’s surfboard collection, her love of this project, and her inspiration for using used surfboards, her “surfboard story.”).

There was also a Silent Auction of art glass and other cool items to benefit the Bridge to Bridge Film Project. One of the paddlers, Clayton Walking Eagle, was there (see the slide show) with the kayaks they will use for the trip from San Francisco to San Diego.

The exhibit is a wonderful introduction to the art glass of this talented artist and her husband Gary Cohen, and you will surely want to visit The Glass Ranch in Escondido at 20307 Beech Lane in the Del Dios neighborhood by Lake Hodges.

The slide show below says it all.

By the way Mother’s Day IS coming up in a few months so consider attending their popular semi-annual open house event.

What a wonderful way to revive used surfboards.  I love the corkboard bench on her website... I love all the boards on her website.  Here on the east coast, we have an artist that carves fish & other sea life from old boards.

Amy - thanks for visiting. I love her work in general, and their studio in Escondido is amazing. I like her philosophy around using used boards, and other artists who do the same.

Susan - well the pictures are not nearly as impressive. :) I think I have a few more photos I took last night. You can see more on her website.

Mitchell - thanks. It was great fun last night, especially with someone I now know personally.

I am thinking that this glass art is like your favorite thing in San Diego County. I know you have written about it before. On another note, do you know if REBAR camp is coming back to San Diego?

Hi Jeff, I noticed this on Pat's posts of the week but couldn't play the video so I will come back when at my desktop. But

the Photo is really beautiful and I like this re-purposing of the surf boards.
