The excitement is building in Austin Texas as the South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival is poised to kick off on March 9. For the past 25 years Austin has been going through its own March Madness, as each year the crowds get larger, and more and more celebrities show up vying for attention. This year the keynote speaker is Bruce Springsteen.
Its a 10 day party extravaganza, chock full of movie premiers and screenings, panel discussions, music, trade shows, parties, and networking. This year there are over 2000 musical acts from 55 countries. Mobile apps keep you in the loop of the excitement and events, but the choices can be overwhelming. Accommodations are at a premium as hotels are over flowing. Demand is spilling over and many 3 bedroom single family homes and condos are leasing for $1000/night -- a nice boost to the local real estate market.
Unlike some other parts of the country that are still experiencing depressed home sales, Austin has been back in a sellers’ market since last November. Inventory (supply) of available homes in January 2012 was down 18 percent compared to January 2011 levels, while sales were up 12 percent during the same period.
