IKEA, the world's biggest furniture retailer has in collaboration with prefab house-maker Ideabox, introduced it's first prefab house designed for the American market.

An article featured in The Huffington Post states that "The house can be delivered to your empty lot by a semi-truck in one or two big pieces. It arrives already constructed and partially furnished, with an IKEA bedroom, kitchen and bathroom installed. "It's your own personal euro designer flat ... only where you want it!"

These eco-friendly homes were designed with the focus on efficiency.

The Ideabox Aktiv is delivered fully assembled with all the cabinets, counter-tops and flooring already installed.According to the Ideabox website, this 750 sq ft one-bed house will sell for $86,500.

Stewart:  I am sure this Ikea home is a great idea for some markets.  Obviously in California, this would go over well if someone had a lot to put it on, and it conformed to the local requirements.

Then, in other markets, it would be different.  In Fort Worth, it isn't all that difficult to find a home for what the price of this unit would be... plus the price of the lot to put it on.  As they say... all real estate is local.

But, all in all... what a great idea.

Karen Anne - I agree that it the concept is great, but it may not work in many parts of the USA.

I was interested to attend a PreFab Showcase during Modernism Week in Palm Springs last week where Santa Monica based Living Homes displayed a 1250 sq ft 3-Bed Prefab home.

The LEED-certified house consisted of three components that were manufactured in a factory and then assembled on site in about eight hours.

At first glance it looked like the floor plan of an old mobile home.

At second glance....it certainly is not.

But it obviously carries over some of the same efficiencies.

Stewart, I've been an avid follower of Michelle Kaufman and her efforts to produce green modulars. Ikea's house reminds me a lot of her work. She and I worked together briefly at KMD architects years ago.

Looks interesting.  I just don't think it's going to work in this market.  Maybe sometime in the future!

Stewart, this is fascinating!  And I think it would work anywhere there is vacant land - and that's a lot of places.

Kinda like the "mo-bile homes" that dot the Idaho landscape - but without the wheels. What about the foundation?

I've been reading a lot about prefab modular homes in the last few years. If I could find a reasonably priced lot I would consider one.

Stewart,What a great idea. It does have a lot of storage . which is great..When they priced it out,I wonder if most of the cost went  towards the construction materials or the furniture. Or maybe a little bit of both. Caprice

Stewart. ovet the past few years I have been reading about container homes, which I find facinating. Eco friendly, reasonable, and certainly different!

This sounds like a good idea too.

Stewart -- the interesting thing to find out is how the lenders are going to classify this house, and if they will be willing to fund it at all.
