PinterestPinterest Traffic on ActiveRain is Exploding!

There are numerous web posts on Pinterest and using Pinterest for real estate.   I have been playing around with Google Analytics looking at traffic sources for ActiveRain this morning, and though the absolute traffic from Pinterest is modest, it seems to be growing faster than almost any other source, including FaceBook.

Below is a snapshot of the growth of traffic to ActiveRain from Pinterest from July 2011 through the end of February 2012.   I have intentionally left out the y-axis.  Pinterest is not a top 10 traffic source for ActiveRain, but it is driving 10% of the monthly traffic that TWITTER is.  That's pretty darn impressive for a web site that has been around for less than a year.

What is Pinterest?

Pinterest is a virtual "pinboard" or a virtual clipboard.  You can basically sign-up for an account, go out on the Internet, and then "pin" or upload cool pictures to your pinboard.  You can categorize and collect different pinboards.  You can trade "pins" from your friends' pinboards.  It's the ultimate "scrapbookers" web site.    It's incredibly visual.  Here is a link to my ActiveRain pinboard on Pinterest.

Who Uses Pinterest?

In the US, Pinterest users are 82% female.

As a Real Estate Professional, Why Should I Care about Pinterest?

In the US, Pinterest users are 82% female.  Sorry, did I repeat myself?  Those of us in online real estate and real estate in general know that women are critical decision makers in home buying and selling AND the majority of traffic on real estate web sites is female.  HGTV anyone?

So connect the dots:

  • Women make many of the decisions around purchasing a home.
  • Women like real estate pictures and photos.
  • Many women like real estate web sites online with photos.
  • Women are spending more time on Pinterest.
  • SO, use Pinterest as another opportunity to build your brand, promote your listings, FEATURE beautiful pictures AND promote your blog.
The great thing about Pinterest is that it features PHOTOS and consumers click on the pictures and click to the blog to get more information.

CounterPoint: Just Say No to Pinterest

Emmary Nicholson wrote a provocative blog post on Pinterest arguing that you shouldn't spend time with Pinterest until there are clearer rules on copyright regarding Pinterest.

NEVER COPY & PASTE someone else's image from Pinterest or any other site and embed in your ActiveRain blog or otherwise.  (Had to throw that in here.)

Pinner & Blogger Beware: All rules relating to copyright and plagiarism still apply.  Pinterest Terms of Service state that you need explicit permission to use the images.  Do not get fined for stealing another's photos online.  To be completely in the clear, only use your own images or photos that you have explicit permission to use.  The same rules apply to using images and photos on ActiveRain.

Tips from Sara at Savings for Someday:

  1. Avoid cutting and pasting
  2. Pin the original source
  4. Don't perpetuate the wrong owner
  5. Watermark your images

I love the look of Pinterest but am still curious abut pinning a photo of a product from the source... say the Pottery Barn website.   With that "pin it" button you can install, does it violate copyright laws?

  • Thanks Niki for posting this.  I really like Pinterest was hearing about the copyright thing and this helps!

The copyright thing concerns me and has since nearly the beginning.  Or maybe the word is confused more than concerned.  I read the TOS and said "Huh?"

I am surprised by people who believe Pinterest is time consuming.  That is what I really liked about it from the beginning.  It is just bookmarking.  Bookmarking should not be time consuming.  It turned out though after happily repinning for about 6 weeks I went back and deleted content that came from or Tumblr sites or from Flickr photos which were not licensed with a Creative Commons license.

Thanks for the mention of my post.

Thanks Niki,

I was going to avoid it but maybe I'll give it a try. I guess I'll just post pictures I took myself to avoid any problems.

Silvia (#7),

This is one of the best tools for Realtors ever. In fact, I have developed a 2-hour course on how to use it. Jump on in. Call me for help if you like. :)

Maureen (#18),

The copyright issue is overblown and not really an issue at all as long as the shots are just pinned as designed. Reuse of them otherwise is where the issues would appear. :)

Wayne (#19),

That's where I started (and I have over 75,000 images to choose from), but the site is much more dynamic than that. It's tailor-made for Realtors:)

I am not up to date on Pinterest but sadly I don't want to be. I'm not a scrap booker I never have been, I sell homes. I know homes come with pictures but do I have to scrapbook them to get a home sold?

I pin all of my blogs to pinterest... sometimes I don't post a photo on facebook- because I would rather write a short blog- so I can post on both facebook and pin to pinterest.  If you use multiple pictures in your blog- you can pin the same blog to several different boards.  I love it!  Kathy

Ineresting post regarding Pinterest.  I've seen quite a bit on it, but didn't realize it was so popular.  I'll have to try and see about getting on it.  I know we all can use as much adverising as we can get, and especially if it's free.  Thanks for the heads up.

I love Pinterest. I didn't realize 82% were female users, but that's not too surprising. I need to start using it more for real estate
