If you haven't already done so, It's high time to fill up the bird feeders!

Bird feeders come in all shapes and sizes and can be very eye catching, pleasing additions to the front or back yard.

They are also a joy to have around, as depending on the feed one can attract a wide range of wildlife. Granted, it is inevitable that you will attract more than just birds.

Squirrels and even meddlesome Raccoons have been known to visit my feeders; but my new squirrel proof feeder, complete with a metal slide that shuts with any heavy weight, works wonders for keeping the squirrels from gobbling up the feed.

Any Wild Bird Store will carry a range of fancy Bird Feeders but Lowes hardware store and Target have good selections too!

Here in Texas, Morning Doves, Cardinals, and the ever present Sparrow can be seen at feeders in full force. Starlings, Martins, and other less prevelant bids will be showing there faces very soon. So now is the time to fill up your feeders.

If you are especially fond of Cardinals, choose a feed that is mostly comprised of sunflower seeds as this seems to be their favorite.

Remember to hang feeders up high as not to tempt the neighborhood cats. Also, is is nice to have some bird houses about to shield your regular visiting birds from the cold.

Happy Bird Watching!

Shellee, I love my bird feeder.  Old Town Spring has a wonderful bird shop that sells some great feeders.  I even love feeding those pesky squirrels.  They work so hard to get the food out of the feeder; I figure they deserve it (lol).

Shellee, I have one in my front yard and the squirrels can't get in it.  It's very quiet during the winter but in the summer it is just beautiful, the birds that come are lovely to watch.

Shellee - I love the bird feeders and watching them.  They are so beautiful!

I don't like the squirrels getting in it, as they make themselves at home and try to make my attic their new home.  They can chew through anything.

I have a bird feeder.  It's called a large pond.  Walked out the front door today just as the heron was taking off.  Also get Kingfishers, Mergansers, Wood Ducks, the occasional Mallard, a Bittern, not to mention the large variety of songbirds.

Lakes and ponds are great places to catch up on bird watching. I used to love going to my Granmothers house on lake Winsborrow and watch all the different song birds, humming birds, waterfowl, and woodpeckers that would collect in her backyard.

*NOTE* I have found that using a prodominantly sunflower seed mixture reduces the volume of common house Sparrows but deters also the Morning Doves. So I stick with a plain wild bird food mixture and keep my Doves happy!

Shellee - I have a question, I have noticed some very pretty chickadees coming to eat, and the sparrows chase them away.  If I get another feeder, I wonder how close I can have them together.

Shellee - We can hear the cardinals singing now.  It's a sure sign of spring when you hear the mating call.  My husband cleaned out the blue bird houses February 23 and we now have families in two of them.  The birds seem to like my flower gardens that I didn't clean out last fall just as much as they like birdfeeders and it doesn't take any work on my part.

Candy- the chickadees are going to be a bit more shy than your resident sparrows. I would place they're feeder in a more secluded place if i where you.

Gloria- Sounds beautiful. They are no doubt finding great things to eat in your flower beds. Many birds prefer to eat off of the ground anyway.
