How NOT To Win Friends and Influence People

Real Estate Broker/Owner with North Shore Suburbs & Chicago Real Estate

WomanLast night, I attended a Dale Carnegie “Skills for Success Preview Session.”  Over the years, I’ve attended dozens of professional development courses and seminars -- but never Dale Carnegie training.  He's the the one that wrote the famous, bestselling book “How to Win Friends and Influence People.”  Anyway, since I’m always keen on personal growth and ways to enhance my business, communication, and leadership skills, I went to check it out.

During the 2-hour session, the trainer told us an in-depth, detailed story.  It was a memory exercise and afterwards, we were instructed to recite the list of details to our assigned partners.  My partner, a 20-something female, quickly and accurately recounted every detail from the story.  Then it was my turn.  I started and stopped a couple of times, struggling to remember some of the details -- which was actually quite surprising since I typically have a very good memory.  That being said, I guess it just wasn't my day.

After the exercise, I congratulated my partner.  I said to her, “You did such a fantastic job reciting all of those details from the story -- how did you manage to remember everything so well?”  She looked at me with a straight face and said, “I’m young.”  Ouch … that hurts.

Hi Carie - Ah, the snottiness of the young! Well, karma has an unpleasant surprise in store for all of them a ways down the road.

I remember when I was 21 and I thought 30 was old. Boy did the years go by quick. Being that I'm currently 30 I look up and when I reflect back on my 21 year old perspective I'm now "that old gal at the bar." Dear heavens...   guess it's all in perspective.

People tell me at my age now, "Oh you're just a baby." My aching back doesn't concur : )

Didi:  Yes, I had to smile ... otherwise I think I would have started crying :)

Margie:  From my perspective, I would have to agree that you are just a baby at 30 :)  But, I know what you mean ... the years sure go by quickly!  And, other than your aching back, you sure don't look like "that old gal at the bar" to me!

John: Oh no ... the dreaded Lost Keys Syndrome!  I hate when that happens ... hope you found them:)

Janis:  Do you remember when you told me that crazy story about the squatters -- and you said you can't make that stuff up?  You're right ... you can't make this stuff up!  Yes, she actually said that to me, and you'll have to tell me your six letter word for next time :)

Carie, the hard part of that for me is that I remember thinking what she said at her age.  I laugh at them, klnowing how quickly the tables (and years!) will turn.

Carie, my first reaction was, "I can't believe she said that!"  But then I kind of got a chuckle out of it.  :)

Kimm:  I think I had the same reaction as you ... shock then amusement :)
